SUMMARY:

The Director of Bands is responsible for the planning, administration, and effective management of all aspects of the Band Program (Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Performing Groups). He/she will supervise the Assistant Band Director, Colette/Woodwind and Color Guard Coordinator, and director of student performing groups (Sojourners, PepBand). These individuals will work together as a team led by the Director of Bands. He/she will teach necessary music classes (on-ground or online) and advise students. This position reports to the Chairperson of the Division of Fine Arts.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position supervises and provides direction to staff engaged in the band programs.
  • Maintains academic excellence by observing, mentoring, and collaborating with faculty.
  • Supervises and assists with the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and retention of qualified instructors and administrators.
  • Facilitates orientation process for new employees in the area.
  • Implements university and department policies.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with college policy.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Performs all duties as listed for Academic Instructor
2. Responsible for the planning of all band performances and parade routines.
3. Responsible for the development, selection/ purchase, and rehearsal of all music to be performed by the Marching Band, the Concert Band, the Jazz Band, and Performing Groups.
4. Supervises the Assistant Band Director, Colette/Woodwind and Color Guard Coordinator, and director of the student performing groups (Sojourners, PepBand, etc.)
4. Maintains accurate records in effectively managing the Band Budget, including the development and maintenance of a long-range plan for purchasing instruments, equipment, and other major expenditures.
5. Maintains all equipment, music, and instruments inventoried to the Band Program.
6. Makes arrangements for student travel and meals and participate in fund-raising efforts as necessary.
7. Develops and executes a recruitment plan for the band and performing groups.
8. Determines scholarships(and amount), maintains accurate records, and communicates effectively with Financial Aid Office.
9. Utilizes instructional technology/software to create marching drills and musical arrangements for performances.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

 
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's Degree in music or Master's Degree with 18 graduate hours in music
  • Five (5) years of full-time band directing experience
  • Experience in the use of instructional technology and/or electronic resources
  • Experience in budget management
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills, initiative, and flexibility
 
PREFERRED JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience as a college/university band director
  • Experience in planning marching shows, concerts, and parade routines
  • Experience in percussion instruction
  • Experience in faculty advisement and post-secondary teaching of applied lessons, Music Theory, Music Appreciation, etc.
 
ENVIRONMENT AND DEMANDS:
  • The work environment can be indoors or outdoors with after-hours duties.
  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
