Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) – a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) under the UMD Vice President of Research (VPR) seeks to hire a Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Data Scientist. We seek talented, experienced professionals who can work with a team to support the research, construction, implementation, test, documentation, and maintenance of socio-technical solutions that provide highly impactful capabilities for the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community.

The Natural Language Processing and Data Scientist’s responsibilities include:
  • Developing NLP systems according to user and sponsor requirements.
  • Synthesizing and summarizing the state of the art in NLP approaches related to complex datasets.
  • Adapting AI and Machine learning algorithms to process textual data sets.
  • Working with human annotators, subject matter experts, and annotation software tools to develop bespoke NLP capabilities.
  • Finding and implement the right algorithms and tools for NLP tasks.
  • Use effective text representations to transform natural language into useful features.
  • Creating custom NLP and data science models from scratch using the integrated data sources.
  • Designing and building custom NLP and data science models based on large datasets.
  • Creating new data processing pipelines and various data science processes including data preparation, feature selection, training, classification, and deployment workflows.
  • Training the developed model and run evaluation experiments.
  • Working closely with user needs experts to develop NLP and AI/ML algorithms/tools for integration in software development.
  • Developing written reports and briefings for stakeholders and customers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in computational linguistics, data science, computer science, statistics, or related fields.

Experience: 
  • Three or more (3+) years of experience building custom data science models using machine learning.
  • Four or more (4+) years of experience with Natural Language Processing and/or visualization tools such as R or Tableau.
  • Three or more (3+) years of experience with Linux.
  • Experience with statistics and statistical analysis of data.
  • Experience with R, Python, SAS, MATLAB, or other programming languages

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Comfortable performing data acquisition, data cleansing and other data preparation tasks Excellent social skills.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Conditions of Employment:

If selected, you must meet the requirements for access to classified information and will be subject to a government security clearance investigation that includes criminal and credit history checks, as well as verification of U.S. citizenship, birth, education, employment, and military history. Must also be able to obtain a TS/SCI U.S. security clearance.

Able to work on-site work from 3-5 days per week at the UMD/ARLIS building in College Park, MD. The position does not support travel expenses from the employee’s lodging to the work site


Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, or another related technical discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience designing and writing production-level code for NLP applications.
  • Experience with other programming languages (e.g. C#, Java, .NET etc.).
  • Experience with writing complex SQL queries and analyzing data correlations.
  • Experience with the AWS ecosystem.
  • Experience with deep learning, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing.
  • Experienced with software engineering processes and techniques.
  • Documented research experience specific to NLP, ML, deep learning, or artificial intelligence either as part of academic activities (e.g., dissertation) or professional experience.
  • Project management skills, ability to scope out timelines, methodologies, and deliverables for development, testing, and integration into the platform.
  • Experience with agile workflow and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD).
  • Experience with project and/or program management.
  • Possess an active Top Secret security clearance.
