Essential Job Duties

The Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University is seeking applicants for a residency position in Comparative Theriogenology being funded by the American Kennel Club-Canine Health Foundation to begin July 15, 2024.

The Theriogenology residency at North Carolina State University is a 2 or 3-year program depending on the candidate’s interest in a graduate degree.  The residency is clinically based with an emphasis primarily on equine and canine species, with additional experience in bovine and small ruminant species. An opportunity also exists for exposure to swine and poultry. Preparation for board certification in the American College of Theriogenologists is a goal of the program. There is 1 board-certified faculty member and hiring is ongoing for a second tenure track position.

There are additional faculty members with board certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and American College of Veterinary Surgeons with interests in neonatology, urology, and other related fields. The resident in Theriogenology will participate in hospital reproductive cases as well as reproductive emergencies in the equine and small animal hospitals. Clinical duties also involve participation in the breeding management of mares and stallions housed at the Equine Theriogenology Clinic at the Reedy Creek Farm, Raleigh, NC. Residents are also involved in both didactic and clinical teaching of veterinary students.

During the second and third years of the program, the resident may complete coursework in statistics, genetics, reproductive physiology and pathology. The resident will complete a research project of her or his choice under the mentorship of the supervising faculty and may be used to fulfill the requirements for a Master of Science in Comparative Biomedical Sciences degree or diplomate status in the American College of Theriogenologist. We are also partnered with Dr. Mathew Breen (http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu/mbs/breen_matthew.htm) for research experience in genetics/genomics and their impact on reproduction.
