The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is one of ten colleges at NC State University, a land grant institution in Raleigh, North Carolina. Agriculture and Life Sciences have been integral parts of North Carolina State University since the doors first opened in 1889. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences continues that heritage today. CALS teaches students in disciplines related to agriculture and life sciences, creates new knowledge through innovative research, provides solutions for the public with community based extension programs, and develops leaders to guide society – all in an effort to improve the economic, environmental and social well-being of our state and the world.

CALS Academic Programs carries out the College’s teaching mission, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as two-year associate degrees through the Agricultural Institute. The CALS Career Services office is part of CALS Academic Programs. The office prepares students for their job search and career and connects them with employers seeking well-trained talent.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Director for Career Services, External Relations is responsible for supporting the career development and employment success of all CALS students through creating, maintaining, and encouraging relationships with organizations and alumni seeking to recruit college talent. The person in this role will accomplish this through strategic outreach and management of inbound requests, as well as ongoing communication and rapport building with organizations with existing participation records in on-campus recruiting efforts. This position will report directly to the Director of CALS Career Services. Primary responsibilities include:

Employer Engagement
  • Develop and execute the strategic plan for CALS engagement with employers at the college level and in partnership with departments, including alumni engagement in career-related activities.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with industry, government agencies, communities, and other potential employers to maximize student opportunities for employment, internships, and other career building experiences. Establish and maintain a customer relationship management (CRM) system for tracking these engagements, and share access and potential opportunities with relevant CALS entities.
  • Engage with the rest of the CALS Career Services team and other professionals across campus to increase the flow of information, encourage collaboration, and make connections for employers with other NC State departments, centers, and units.
  • Lead the coordination of on-campus recruiting events for CALS students, including career fairs, on-campus interviews, and other engagement events with prospective employers.
  • Collaborate with CALS Advancement and Academic Programs to build opportunities for alumni, donors, and employers to engage with faculty and staff and to participate in the professional development process of students.
  • Manage CALS job and internship postings in the ePACK database and work with other CALS Career Services staff and college departments to make students aware of employment opportunities.
  • Maintain and participate in career education programming and services to support the mission of the office and gain insights into student needs, including managing alumni and industry panels and networking events.
  • Establish and manage an Advisory Board for CALS Career Services, and potentially oversee advisory board consultation with college departments.

Program and Administrative Management
  • Lead the development and growth of the CALS Alumni for Student Success (CASS) Career Coach program, including providing supervision for the CASS Graduate Assistant
  • Manage the Altria Internship program within CALS and other programs that connect students with internship and job opportunities.
  • Gather and analyze data to support decision-making, including in regard to employer engagement and student outcomes.
  • Access and report data as needed for the CALS Academic Programs office.
  • Develop CALS Career Services annual report and assist with other reporting needs
  • Provide career-related education and services to students as needed to support CALS Career Services operations
  • Supervise interns and student workers as needed to meet office needs.
  • May be required to adjust work hours to meet student and organizational needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline, or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, with a minimum of 3 years of related professional experience in relationship management or higher education.

  • Ability to track, monitor, analyze, assess, and report on the career-readiness of students and employer engagement.

  • Ability to utilize technology in the delivery of programs and in managing projects.
  • Unwavering commitment to the highest of ethical standards and professional integrity.
  • Understanding and acknowledgement of issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the delivery of programs and services, and a willingness to incorporate program and service elements that make them more consistent with DEI best practices.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in student personnel/higher education, business, business development/analytics, human resources, recruitment, agriculture, life sciences, or a related field.
  • 1+ years experience working in employer relations in a higher education career services office or 1+ years experience in a sales, recruiting, or similar relationship management position.
  • Experience with the agriculture and/or life sciences industries, particularly in North Carolina.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid driver’s licensed required. 
  • Valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
