POSITION TITLE: Emergency Preparedness Project Specialist Public Health AmeriCorps

TERM LENGTH: December 15, 2023 – September 30, 2024, 900 hours, start date is flexible

HOST SITE: Ingham County Health Department

HOST SITE SUPERVISOR: Christine Hendrickson, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

ICHD Emergency Preparedness is dedicated to promoting a state of readiness and prompt response to protect the health of the citizens of Ingham County during a public health emergency/disaster, including natural, technological, and terrorist events.

MEMBER IMPACT:

The Emergency Preparedness Project Specialist Public Health AmeriCorps will be pivotal in the recruitment of new Ingham County volunteers to the statewide volunteer registry (Michigan Volunteer Registry) and recruitment of new Closed Point of Dispensing (POD) partners. In the event of a public health emergency or disaster where medication (pills) need to be dispensed to those who may be affected, a representative of the Closed POD site will pick up the medication from ICHD and take it back to their site and dispense to patients/residents/employees/inmates using their own staffing.

In the role of Emergency Preparedness Project Specialist Public Health AmeriCorps, you will developknowledge and ​skills for the broad practice of public health.

 

Assessment and Decision Making

· Collect Closed POD member information using the Closed POD Enrollment Form.

· Utilize structured methods to assess community health needs and available resources.

· Make informed decisions based on evidence to enhance community health.

· Contribute to data-driven strategies for improving the health of communities.

· Organizing records, collecting and analyzing data.

· Developing, implementing, evaluating, and improving programs.

 

Program Planning and Policy Development

· Help evaluate the MI Volunteer Registry and Closed POD program.

· Providing MI Volunteer Registry recruitment at health fairs.

· Providing Closed POD recruitment/enrollment via phone.

 

Communication skills

· Understand and address the communication needs of different populations, including language and culture.

· Find ways to share information regarding the MI Volunteer Registry and Closed POD program effectively.

· Help people understand the roles of ICHD in a public health emergency or disaster.

· Communicate in person, over the phone, and through email with potential Closed POD partners.

· Communicate in person with potential Ingham County volunteers for the MI Volunteer Registry.

· Acknowledge and embrace the diversity of Ingham County and ICHD and communities served.

· Reflect on personal beliefs and biases and strive for improvement.

 

Community Partnership Skills

· Establishing and maintaining community partnerships with Closed POD partners.

 

Public Health Sciences Skills

· Understand how historical events and policies have influenced public health.

· Perhaps some background about volunteerism trends and the COVID-19 Pandemic and what influence that may have regarding volunteerism and Closed POD enrollment.

· Forge partnerships with volunteers and potential Closed POD partners to improve public health.

 

Leadership Skills

· Recruiting a diverse group of Ingham County volunteers for the MI-Volunteer Registry through health fairs and other community engagement activities.

· Managing timelines to achieving goals regarding volunteer recruitment and Closed POD enrollment.

· Engages in professional development

ELIGIBILITY

· be 18 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit)

· be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien

· Agree to and pass a national service criminal history check with eligibility verification in accordance with 45 CFR 2540.202

 

REQUIRED ACTIVITIES:

  • Engage in monthly AmeriCorps cohort meetings
  • Attend AmeriCorps orientation at the Ingham County Health Department
  • All members will participate in an end of service performance evaluation
  • All members will be required to submit bi-weekly time sheets, quarterly data reports, and all other data tasks requested by the Host Site
  • All Public Health AmeriCorps members are required to complete “Foundational Training for Public Health AmeriCorps” by the CDC
  • Completion of all Roles and Responsibilities specified above

 

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

· Communication skills (in person, over the phone, and thru email)

SERVICE CONDITIONS:

· Service is to be completed in person, with Supervision unless otherwise discussed with program coordinator.

· Typical office environment, may field (health fairs)

· Regular hours will be completed during 8am-5pm Monday thru Friday

 

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:

· $10,000 living stipend (pre-tax) for service term; paid every other week in equal amounts based on length of member term

· $3,447.50 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of service term
