Who We Are

The Weill Institute, opened in June 2008, is an interdisciplinary hub of life science research at Cornell with a $15M budget, $11M in sponsored research. Our faculty perform cutting edge cell biological research, from basic molecular mechanisms to human diseases. We bring together faculty, students, and postdocs from various departments and graduate fields to facilitate ongoing collaborations among different research areas in biology. Our success relies on over 125 personnel, including 12 faculty members from 6 different academic departments, who are housed together in Weill Hall on the Ithaca campus.


What You Will Do
We are seeking a self-motivated individual to join an administrative team dedicated to the Institute’s mission and respect for each other. The successful candidate will provide independent financial and administrative support to the Institute’s faculty, staff and trainees with guidance from the Director of Administration:

  • Monitor and maintain sponsored and non-sponsored accounts, using a working knowledge of applicable sponsor and Cornell policies.
  • Initiate a variety of financial transactions to promote Institute objectives and comply with policy.
  • Serve as primary liaison to Sponsored Funds Services for closing awards, in accordance with accepted policy and procedure.
  • Perform a variety of purchasing functions, especially with respect to capital assets and associated service agreements.
  • Process important human resources transactions, including graduate student appointments and financial aid, effort costing and retroactive salary transfers, undergraduate hires and routine appointment extensions for postdoctoral associates and other staff. Assist with on-boarding.
  • Serve as Institute’s primary timekeeper for non-exempt payroll every two weeks.
  • Maintain central records for personnel, including Institute roster, listservs and active directory registration.

 

What We Need

  • Associates Degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination
  • Previous financial experience in medium to large organizations with complex accounting structures, polices and procedures.
  • Ability to apply analytical skills to understand issues, solve problems, make appropriate decisions and document procedures.
  • Intermediate proficiency in common business software (especially Excel) and enterprise level systems for accounting, purchasing and human resources – and experience using such systems to download and manage data to provide information for good business decisions.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive data with discretion.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serve others to meet common goals and contribute to both accomplishments and a culture of teamwork.
  • Comfort prioritizing work and meeting deadlines, sometimes on short notice.


What We Prefer

Additionally, we would like to see evidence of:

  • Experience with Cornell or other university’s policies and procedures in accounting, sponsored projects, travel, purchasing, payroll and human resources
  • Expertise in some of the following: Excel, KFS, Workday, OBIEE dashboards, Peoplesoft, Concur, and eShop.
  • Experience working in a natural sciences research environment.
