Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) – a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) under the UMD Vice President of Research (VPR). ARLIS seeks to hire a Systems Engineer to work closely with sponsors to architect complex software system and integrate those systems into legacy platforms. Your work will aid in Test and Evaluation, Research and Development, Deployment activities, and Project/Knowledge Management. Your role includes opportunities for increased leadership responsibilities and direct interaction with project sponsors. Your role also provides you opportunities for both project and technical leadership of projects at ARLIS. Join us as we apply systems engineering and data science to help military leaders make informed decisions.  Duties: work with DoD PMS and Vendors to document System Architectures, Data Flows, and Work flows to assist in Test and Evaluation, Research and Development, and Deployment.

Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with software development teams to understand and document system views including dataflows, component interactions, scaling references, controller models, and operational workflows.
  • Work closely with software development teams to architect and design new systems for scale, security, and resilience.
  • Work with software development teams to ensure that appropriate unit, integration, and CI/CD mechanisms are in place to address architectural risks in complex software systems.
  • Help with configuration management plans and policies for newly developed software systems.
  • Work with test and evaluation teams to identify architectural risks in software systems and integrate into risk management frameworks and assurance plans for lifecycle management.
  • Work with ARLIS engineering teams as task lead, technical director, or program manager using technical expertise to address schedule, cost, and scope related risks.
  • Work with other technical directors and project managers to develop appropriate software system quality assurance plans for key technical deliverables to sponsors.
  • Interface directly with sponsors in the capacity of software architect

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or relevant technical discipline

Experience:
  • 10+ years of related work experience
  • 5+ years of documented success applying systems thinking to complex system development or citizen-service delivery challenges
  • Experience doing system integration effort in a Command and Control environment.
  • Proven experience in management and traceability of requirements and relevant model/architecture artifacts

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Able to work with PMs and Vendors to document system Architectures, data flows, and work flows
  • Hands on proficiency using Systems Engineering tools such as: MagicDraw, Cameo Enterprise Architecture, UML / SysML, Rhapsody, Stella, iThink, Anylogic, Systemitool, etc.
  • Have an active Secret Clearance. 

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Have, or in pursuit of, a Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or relevant technical discipline
  • Experience working with Government preferred, but experience working on transformational projects in other complex environments may be considered.
  • Qualified candidates holding current / active US Government security clearance(s) are highly preferred.
  • Experience working with Defense and Intelligence applications
  • 15+ years professional experience
