JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Youth Support Specialist, Orangewood Resource Center
Employment Classification: Full-time; Hourly; Non-Exempt
Reports to: ORC Supervisor
Department: Program
Program Summary: The Orangewood Resource Center (ORC) is a drop-in center for Transitional-Age Youth (TAY) ages 18-24 to access community resources and short-term case management services to support their transition to self-sufficiency.
Position Summary: Youth Support Specialists (YSS) provides assistance and life skills instruction to all TAY who visit the ORC. YSS will provides basic needs support and assist youth with getting connected to community resources (e.g.: employment, education, housing, etc.) that will assist the youth with achieving their greatest potential.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Provide an orientation/tour of the ORC for new clients, new staff, volunteers and others as appropriate.
- Maintain and distribute ORC resource materials (job board, housing list, hygiene items, meals, groceries, school supplies, emergency work clothes, etc.).
- Establish professional, collaborative relationships with all outside community partners who provide their services on site.
- Plan and coordinate ORC youth activities.
- Support ORC policies and procedures.
- Administer needs assessment to identify areas that require immediate support.
- Assist youth with becoming familiar with and connect to appropriate community resources.
- Proficient in utilizing verbal de-escalation skills/techniques.
- Demonstrate the ability to quickly and calmly diffuse crisis situations.
- Ability to adapt to and work in a high crisis environment.
- Skilled in establishing a strong rapport with all youth.
- Provide good customer service by responding timely to phone calls, emails, youth or others who walk into the ORC.
- Keep ORC and ORC kitchen organized, clean, and in good repair.
- Complete data entry timely into the Apricot database.
- Must be able to meet all deadlines related to documentation within Apricot database.
Knowledge, Skill and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor degree completed in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or related field is preferred.
- Bi-lingual Spanish is preferred.
- Minimum of 1-year experience working with TAY population is required; 2+ years’ experience is highly preferred.
- Minimum of 1-year experience with crisis intervention/de-escalation techniques; 2+ years’ experience is highly preferred.
- Demonstrate a moderate understanding of Trauma Informed Care, challenges/barriers with TAY population, resources available within Orange County community.
- Ability and flexibility to work in a high crisis, fast paced environment.
- Understand that evening hours are required; may also need weekend hours coverage.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, and Access. Preferred knowledge in data entry.
- Possess a valid California driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance. Position requires DMV clearance.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, FBI/DOJ fingerprinting, drug test, TB test, and employment verification.

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:
Various working environments based on needs of program- can include office, community/group, as well as outdoor settings. Occasional driving to meetings/trainings. Physical requirements include standing, sitting, typing, bending and lifting up to approximately 50 lbs. (e.g.: tables, canopies, chairs, food, water, etc.) Modification to work schedule may be made based on need of the Foundation and ORC.
