We have a vacancy in the Research Management & Innovation Directorate of King’s College London for the role of Business Development Manager within the Core Facilities team.

The King’s Core Facilities team deliver a portfolio of world-class shared research facilities, technical services and technology platforms for imaging, biological and medical sciences, physical and materials sciences and digital technologies. In an incredibly fast-advancing environment, it is vital that we continually develop and adapt our strategies around business engagement both nationally and internationally.

Reporting to the Director of Research Platforms, the post holder will join a small team of Business Development Managers working across the Platforms facilities who are striving to identify and capitalise on new commercial opportunities.  The post holder will have a strong focus on our imaging facilities (including our Nikon Imaging Centre, Microscopy Innovation Centre, and Centre for Ultra Structural Imaging). The post holder will be looking to increase income generation in a range of ways, including commercialisation of our imaging resources or specialist knowledge; tendering for commissioned research, interventions and/or evaluations; educational programmes for workforce development in relevant sectors; fostering knowledge transfer and exchange partnerships.

Strong negotiation skills and a track record of identifying and securing new business opportunities through market research and proactive networking is essential.  Highly collaborative working style is essential.  Specialist skills and knowledge in the field of imaging are required.  Experience in developing and delivering business plans including financial planning and reporting is essential.

This is a hybrid role (remote working / onsite working) and it is expected that the post holder may, at times, spend up to two days a week on campus in order to understand and relate their work to the day-to-day onsite research operations at King’s.

This post will be offered on a permanent contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities to exploit the King’s Core Facilities academic endeavours to create new income streams, with a focus on the imaging facilities  
  • Actively engage with academics and technicians from across the Core Facilities to fully understand the capabilities and knowledge 
  • Engage internally with the contracting team, IP & Licensing and other relevant RMID teams 
  • Engage externally with relevant sectors, industries, and businesses with a view to exploit the capabilities of the Core Facilities 
  • Promote King’s Core Facilities by actively participating in relevant technical networks, events, and societies 
  • Generate new income streams through commercialisation of knowledge, facilities and/or research and development projects 
  • Support academic staff to build their confidence and skills in business engagement 
  • Write business plans including financial budget delivery plans allied to external income stream generation 
  • Develop materials to communicate services both internally and externally 
  • Update the Core Facilities Leadership Team regularly on secured business and achievements of milestones and deliverables, developments in progress and opportunities being scoped 
  • Represent the Core Facilities externally at key events within the region, nationally, or on occasion, internationally 
  • Undertake research and market analysis, including client profiling and high growth potential business opportunities and contacts 
  • Prepare and present fully costed commercial proposals

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria  

  1. Specialist skills/ knowledge in an imaging field 
  2. Experience in developing and delivering business plans including financial planning and reporting 
  3. Experience in identifying market opportunities and developing new business opportunities 
  4. Demonstrable negotiation skills 
  5. Experience in building sustainable relationships with external groups, clients and companies and the ability to define opportunities 
  6. In-depth understanding of the higher education sector especially the need for universities to diversify their activity and income streams.  
  7. Strong communication skills.  
  8. The ability to develop sustainable networks and productive relationships with external clients that result in new business.  
  9. The ability to influence and deliver through others. 
  10. Ability to identify opportunities for the Core Facilities through understanding external business needs and the requirements of sectors relevant to the College 

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience in project management, financial planning and reporting, and evaluation of cost-benefits and returns on investment
