About the Department

The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2, 240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

The Building Maintenance & Operations unit provides programs and services which help to maintain the University’s facilities. In support of the University’s 2000+ acres of campus landscape, services provided include landscape construction, grounds maintenance and comprehensive waste and recycling programs. Campus repair needs in areas such as carpentry, painting, roofing and signage are also provided by this unit for the University’s 14.6 million square feet of teaching, research and administrative space.

Essential Job Duties

This position will serve as an apprentice assisting roofers with daily projects. Responsibilities will include delivering materials to job site, supplying roofers with materials and mechanics with ladders and scaffolds, assisting in patching built-up roofs with hot and cold applications. Help patch streets with asphalt, assist in waterproofing buildings below grade. Caulk expansion joints, belt course, and coping stone. Will assist in other job duties as assigned.

Other Responsibilities

This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule. This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to perform apprentice level work assisting roofers with commercial buildings
  • Ability to climb ladders, work on top of university buildings
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of roofing systems.
  • Experience working in a commercial setting performing roofing & waterproofer duties

Required License or Certification

  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
