Patrick & Henry Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution committed to student success, lifelong learning, and enrichment of the quality of life in the region it serves. Serving Martinsville, Henry County, Patrick County, and the southern portion of Franklin County, P&HCC is a comprehensive open-door institution, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. Patrick & Henry offers 29 associate degree programs, 12 certificate programs and 38 career studies certificate programs. The college also delivers a variety of nontraditional programs such as customized workforce development training, industry-recognized certifications, developmental and transitional programs, and courses for personal enrichment.

P&HCC staff members work with a student population that reflects the diversity of the of Virginia, with more than 40 percent of current students coming from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. Knowledge and understanding of specific needs of underserved populations and a commitment to helping these individuals attain educational success are critical responsibilities of our institution.
 

Purpose of Position:
Workforce Advising and Coaching Specialist will assist students interested or enrolled in noncredit and credit workforce training with career and educational planning services, program admissions, financial aid, successful training and credential completion, identifying work-based learning opportunities, and job placement and retention. Coaches will assist students in overcoming barriers to their success by connecting them to supportive services in their region, including the services of the one stop career centers, as appropriate. The coach will work closely with students before, during, and after their training and credentialing programs to provide support throughout the program and into the workforce.
 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
The Workforce Advising and Coaching Specialist should have the ability to build relationships and provide excellent coaching services to students pursuing short-term workforce training, as well as strong recordkeeping skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. The coach should have basic knowledge of the workforce development system in Virginia and support resources and some experience in accessing supportive services for clients. The coach should have excellent communication skills and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with community college and workforce partners and employers. The Workforce Advising and Coaching Specialist works collaboratively with members of the Workforce Advising and Coaching team, the Career Center, as well as others in the WECD Division. Travel may be required to provide advising or coaching services or to meet with stakeholders.
The Workforce Advising and Coaching Specialist should have basic knowledge and experience in most of the following areas.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Case management and development of individual action plans
  • Exhibit professionalism and maintain confidentiality
  • Job search, resume writing, interview, and professional soft skills
  • Communicating and building networks with a variety of workforce partners and stakeholders
  • Workforce development programs (e.g. WIOA, RVHI) and credentials
  • Career assessment and labor market information
  • Student resources including financial aid (e.g., WCG, FANTIC) and supportive services
  • Active listening skills
  • Effective critical thinking skills: ability to analyze situations and problems
  • Working with individuals from underserved populations
  • Data systems, operations, and linkages
  • Microsoft Office and social media
 
Workforce advisors and coaches will be expected to participate in regular, ongoing professional development offered by the VCCS system office, in both online and face-to-face formats, at times and dates to be announced.
