POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: SOCIOLOGY INSTRUCTOR
DEPARTMENT: SOCIAL SCIENCE
SALARY RANGE: $36,386 – $46,578

FLSA: EXEMPT
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: DIVISION CHAIR
SCHEDULE DETAILS: FULL TIME, 9 MONTHS, AS ASSIGNED

The Sociology Instructor will teach sociology courses as scheduled and agreed to with division chair and in keeping with the guidelines listed below, and fulfill committee and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments may include traditional, online, flex, or multiple campus sites as needed, but position is primarily associated with online and Neosho campus offerings. The full time Sociology Instructor will serve as a point of contact, mentor, and advisor to adjunct sociology instructors.

 

Essential Job Duties
Some of the duties listed below would be day to day management of the Counselor and will vary depending on
the need(s) of the college. Priorities Include:

  • Devote primary time and energy to instruction with an emphasis on achieving desired student learning outcomes with emphasis on content of the institutional syllabus.
  • Maintain awareness of essential developments in their academic fields.
  • Participate in professional development functions as needed to achieve personal, instructional, and institutional goals.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Respect student thought.
  • Collaborate in the selection of course materials in conjunction with departmental and division leadership and report selected materials to the bookstore by prescribed deadlines.
  • Develop and distribute course syllabi inclusive of the institutional syllabi with copies supplied through prescribed channels each semester.
  • Evaluate, document, and return student exams and papers in a timely fashion.
  • Submit institutional reports by deadlines.
  • Meet classes at their institutionally listed times.
  • Maintain 8-10 regular office hours with a range of availability appropriate to optimize student access.
  • Serve on institutional committees as needed.
  • Teach 15 hours per semester as a regular load.
  • Meet assigned departmental and divisional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Dismiss classes only with prior approval from the division chair.
  • Schedule no more than one week’s worth of absences for school business, school activities, or personal days per semester.
  • Attend graduation ceremonies.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Willingness to teach or learn to teach in a range of delivery modes (Primarily traditional, but inclusive of online, flex, and other formats as needed.)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement responsibilities effectively.
  • Preferential consideration will be given to applicants credentialed to teach in an additional social science discipline (Geography, History, Philosophy, or Political Science.)
  • Information Technology abilities required:
o Ability to operate a computer using a Windows environment.
o Ability to operate a computer within the Crowder College network environment.
o Ability to use all relevant computer programs and systems.
o Ability to use email.
o Ability to use basic Microsoft Office.
o Ability to use typical classroom presentation equipment such as projectors, monitors, and other
presentation tools as needed.
  • Creative and analytical skills:
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to devise or modify methods or processes to solve specific problems.
  • Language/Communication Skills:

o Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people, including staff, students, other
professionals, and the general public, in both written and oral mediums.

 
 
Education and Experience
• Master’s degree required in Sociology or closely related field.
  • Community College or higher education teaching experience preferred.

Working Environment
• Generally, works indoors in standard office and classroom environments.
  • Normal 9 month college working hours but adjustment of hours involving evening and/or weekend work
may occasionally be required.

Physical

  • Instructional time typically involves standing/moving around instructional spaces for up to 3 75 minute instructional periods in a row with 15 minute interludes between classes
  • Office hours and preparatory work are typically sedentary, involving sitting most of the time but will involve mobility within the campus and various sites
  • Input, access and distribute information using computers.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms’ stoop, kneel, or crouch; and talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
