The Opportunity  


The University of Central Florida (UCF) School of Performing Arts is seeking a world class artist/scholar to join its well-established Jazz Studies program as a 9-month tenure-earning assistant professor in jazz drum set. Instructional duties include recruiting for and teaching applied jazz drum set, the weekly drum set masterclass, and other courses according to the ability of the applicant and needs of the jazz area and music department. The successful candidate will also assist the Director of Jazz Studies with implementing the jazz curriculum and events. A strong background as a highly established jazz drum set performer/teacher is essential. The UCF Jazz Studies program is steeped in the jazz tradition and dedicated to advancing jazz pedagogy. Minimum Qualifications: 


  • Documented significant professional reputation, performance, and recording experience as a jazz drum set artist commensurate with a tenure-earning position.

  • A master’s degree in music with an emphasis in jazz studies from an accredited institution or bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis in jazz studies from an accredited institution with 20 plus years of internationally recognized professional experience in performance and extensive recording credits with luminaries in jazz. 


 


Preferred Qualifications: 


  • The ability to teach additional coursework in jazz studies, such as jazz chamber groups, big bands, jazz workshops (applied improvisation), styles and analysis, jazz theory, or other jazz related courses.

  • Acumen with online instruction for the possibility of teaching online or in mixed mode scenarios.

  • Ability to teach other courses in the music department, such as Music Technology, Music Business, etc.

  • Evidence of success at university-level teaching, recruiting, and mentoring. 

  • Administrative acumen and experience in implementing curriculum within a collegiate jazz studies program.
