Position Highlights

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Arizona is accepting applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in the College of Medicine – Tucson. We seek investigators with interest in molecular pharmacology in mitochondrial genetics, bioenergetics, neuroscience, mitochondria imaging in vivo and in vitro, and mitochondrial medicine for age-related diseases. The successful applicant should have experience in developing novel transgenic mouse models and translational preclinical models that can be applied to discovery of new therapeutics or development of novel treatment paradigms for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and ALS. Further, the applicant should have previous experience in managing core facility for mitochondria analyses and experience in behavioral analyses for phenotyping mitochondrial mouse models.

The Department has a strong internationally recognized program dedicated to the study of BBB physiology and pharmacology in the setting CNS diseases. The expertise of the current faculty members encompasses a spectrum of molecular, neurobiological, neuropharmacological, and multidisciplinary techniques allowing for vibrant collaborative efforts designed to address questions that integrate NVU/BBB biology into neuropharmacology.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Seek and/or retain extramural funding for research by developing and submitting research grant proposals to appropriate funding agencies; as Principal Investigator, partner with faculty to form research teams, develop research plans, write funding proposals, and implement and dissemination of results through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and invited lectures.
  • Develop independent research programs and contribute to graduate (Ph.D.) and medical (M.D.) education.
  • Engage in teaching activities for undergraduate and graduate students and/or medical students.
  • Participate on appropriate departmental and/or College of Medicine committees, and professional organization committees as appropriate.
  • Additional duties may be assigned as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work collaboratively with excellent communication skills. 
  • Established expertise working with diverse communities. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Assistant or Associate Professor – or equivalent position from research institutes or industry.
  • PhD and/or MD or comparable doctoral degree.
  • At least three (3) years of postdoctoral training.
  • Meet UArizona criteria for appointment to a tenure eligible faculty position.
  • Established record of productivity and innovation.
  • Established, or strong potential to establish, an independent lab and extramurally funded research program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated expertise in mitochondrial genetics, mitochondrial function, mitochondrial imaging, mitochondrial mouse model development, mitochondrial drivers of age-associated neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and ALS.
  • Experience performing experimental / preclinical animal research.
  • Experience in molecular biology/pharmacology.
  • Experience in writing grants and peer-reviewed publications.
