Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III for the department of Psychiatry at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Dr. Andrew Westbrook is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join the Brain Modulation & Control Lab led by Dr. Westbrook and located at the Rutgers Center for Advanced Human Brain Imaging Research (CAHBIR) and the RWJMS Department of Psychiatry. Through cognitive and computational neuroscience, BMC Lab seeks to elucidate the mechanisms underlying control of brain function and behavior. Dr Westbrook’s team leverages MRI, EEG, TMS, pharmacology, eye-tracking, and computational modeling to study how neuromodulators shape the neural dynamics underlying higher order cognitive function with a particular focus on cognitive control and working memory.
CAHBIR (https://sites.rutgers.edu/cahbir/) provides a state-of-art facility for brain imaging research including a research dedicated 3T Scanner. It also includes a TMS-EEG Core directed by Dr. Westbrook. Additionally, Rutgers affiliated centers include including the Rutgers University Center for Cognitive Science, the Rutgers-Princeton Center for Computational Cognitive Neuropsychiatry, the Rutgers Brain Health Institute and the RWJMS Department of Psychiatry provide exceptional opportunities for learning in clinical and cognitive neuroscience.
The Research Assistant will be supervised by Dr. Westbrook and will contribute to ongoing projects and including conducting specialized research and using judgment to adapt methods and techniques. They will also, in consultation with Dr. Westbrook, contribute to management of the lab, and assist with budgetary, training, and administrative responsibilities. Specific responsibilities include organizing and executing research studies with a special focus on TMS-EEG experiments. This will include ordering supplies and maintaining equipment and direct data collection. They will also be responsible for data management and writing and curating analysis scripts and processing pipelines for the lab.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Assists in the establishment of performance standards, as well as in the selection of methodology and instrumentation.
  • Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development regarding the functions of the laboratory. Participates in the evaluation of the existing procedures, suggesting revisions where necessary and proposing new procedures where required.
  • Assists in the organization, planning, and execution of TMS-EEG studies in the lab. This will also involve collection of functional and structural MRI data.
  • Helps coordinate subject recruitment and data management.
  • Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows and technicians in various techniques and procedures to develop the skills necessary to carry out assignments in the laboratory assistants.
  • May coordinate, supervise and evaluate the work of non-professional staff.
  • Compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions and recommendations.
  • Assists in the preparation of grant applications for the funding of research activities.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant science plus one year of related research experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science plus two years of related research experience. Relevant Sciences include Neuroscience, Psychological/Cognitive Science, and Biological Science.
  • Experience with neuroimaging research, coding in MATLAB and / or Python, subject recruitment and study coordination are requirements for the position.
  • For candidates with a Master’s Degree, the requirement for at least one year of related research experience may have been met during their degree program if the research conducted matches the specific research of Dr. Westbrook’s Brain Modulation & Control Lab.
