Materials Chemistry Postdoc

Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL ) is an inclusive and supportive community of scientists and engineers making significant impacts in stride in the fields of materials science and energy. Join our dynamic team at the The Materials Sciences Division , where we are pioneering the future of materials and energy through adaptive interfacial assemblies.

We are seeking candidates from diverse backgrounds for a Postdoctoral Scholar to lead the synthetic development of functional materials and systems comprising liquids structured using interfacial assemblies of small molecules, nanoparticles, polymers, biomolecules, etc. If you're passionate about fundamental and use-inspired basic science and interested in how to leverage your expertise in synthesis and assembly to understand and control the properties of patterned or printed structured liquids, this position may be a good fit for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise in organic, polymer, or nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, and assembly at liquid–liquid interfaces.
  • Develop new concepts for directing pattern generation in interfacial assemblies of polymers or nanoparticles.
  • Devise new strategies for controlling chemical and energetic transformations in all-liquid materials and devices, such as chemical coupling, spatial confinement, functional interfaces, and transport-enabled interfaces.
  • Collaborate with MSD PIs and program Postdocs to deepen the understanding of the fundamental principles underlying the reconfigurability of structured liquids, both in and out of equilibrium.
  • Mentor junior researchers associated with the program while collectively achieving program milestones on schedule.
  • Play a key role in maintaining a robust and inclusive safety culture.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals, contribute to scientific research papers, reports, and review articles, and deliver impactful oral reports.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science and engineering.
  • Proven experience in synthetic organic chemistry or systems chemistry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or expertise in characterization methods of organic and polymeric materials and their assemblies.
  • Proven ability to conduct and perform collaborative research and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately and eloquently represent and promote scientific projects to audiences of diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters.
  • Ability to guide and train junior researchers.

Why Join Us?

  • Contribute to groundbreaking research that aims to revolutionize materials and energy devices.
  • Collaborate with world-renowned scientists, including Brett Helms, Tom Russell, Alex Zettl, Ahmad Omar, and Paul Ashby.
  • Work in a vibrant and inclusive research environment, fostering creativity and innovation.
  • Mentor and guide junior researchers to help shape the future of materials science.
  • Enjoy the support and resources of a leading research institution committed to safety and excellence.
