Job Description


The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Associate (Postdoctoral level) to work under the supervision of Dr. Gary Koenig, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering..

The successful candidate will participate in a project accelerating the commercialization of a battery technology platform. Primary objectives include optimizing process conditions towards manufacturing of the relevant battery technology, troubleshooting fundamental challenges if they arise in the material system, and conducting customer discovery and interviews to continue to refine the value proposition to potential customers. The successful candidate will be in involved in all areas of accelerating the technology readiness, demonstration, and manufacturing level towards commercialization.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, or a related field, by the start date.  Experience in battery materials synthesis, characterization, and processing is required. Experience with synthesis/fabrication of active materials, electrodes, and custom cell designs for lithium-ion batteries is required. Ability to translate material or system modifications to battery property outcomes through the use of simulation and/or data analysis tools (e.g., machine learning) strongly preferred. Prior experience with thick electrode systems will be highly relevant to this technology. Previous experience in communicating with lithium-ion battery stakeholders and conducting customer discovery and interviews towards battery technology commercialization also strongly preferred. Experience in considerations of battery technology for powering wearable devices also preferred.
