About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is seeking a visionary leader to join our organisation, who will play a pivotal role in driving innovation in careers and employability services and support for students, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and ensuring the long-term success of Sydney Careers.

The Centre Director will provide strategic and operational leadership and direction for Sydney Careers. This role is responsible for planning, budgeting, staffing, quality assurance, implementation, and evaluation of all activities of the Centre and for the management and development of Sydney Careers staff.

The Centre Director works collaboratively as part of the Sydney Connect leadership team and is expected to contribute to a range of strategic-led and industry-informed programs that enhance student employability and job readiness. The jobholder will develop, implement, and evaluate programs, systems and policies to ensure the provision of quality services and program delivery to all clients of Sydney Careers promoting career readiness and enhancing their employability skills.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to a team of career and employability professionals, including operational management of Sydney Careers
  • collaborate with senior university academic and professional staff, and industry partners to develop and implement a comprehensive career and employability services strategy
  • ensure that Sydney Careers supports the University's strategic plan and achieves agreed performance targets and outcomes focused on student employability and job readiness
  • lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team, and develop and maintain a high level of morale, commitment and performance
  • develop and implement data-driven approaches to assess the effectiveness of career and employability services programs and initiatives
  • develop, manage and monitor the Sydney Careers budget and the effective allocation of resources
  • contribute to the field of career and employability services by maintaining professional expertise and networks through membership of NAGCAS (National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) and AGE (Australian Association of Graduate Employers) both nationally and internationally.

About you

  • postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field together with extensive relevant experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • ability to develop high level policy and to identify, plan, develop and manage strategies in relation to providing university wide careers services and services to graduate employers in a changing environment
  • in-depth knowledge and a strong understanding of the needs and expectations of employers in various industries and the ability to cultivate strong partnerships with employers
  • expert and comprehensive knowledge of career development theories, labor market trends, employers, and graduate recruitment practices across a range of industries
  • demonstrated ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences at all levels internally and externally
  • a comprehensive understanding of how courses of study translate into specific careers and employment outcomes
  • extensive experience in career services coupled with a strong understanding of industry trends, and the ability to build partnerships with employers and stakeholders
  • experience with technology platforms and tools used in career and employability services, such as career management systems
  • financial management experience and literacy, experience managing budgets and controlling income and expenditure for a project.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
