Job description

We are looking for a lecturer passionate about Chemistry education with a demonstrable interest in new and innovate teaching methods to deliver a contemporary Chemistry curriculum to students across our foundation, UG BSc/MSci and MRes programmes. 

The role will include design and delivery of teaching in laboratories, lectures and workshops plus associated assessment, marking and supporting a blended learning approach in the department. 

The successful candidate will have the ability to inspire students and fellow academics alike making KCL Chemistry Education a leader in its field.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Chemistry with experience delivering teaching at undergraduate level.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and delivery of lectures, workshops, practicals and computer labs at foundation, UG and PGT level where required.  
  • Contributing to the planning, design and development of objectives and material needed for an innovative chemistry curriculum. 
  • Advocate for and use innovative teaching, learning support and assessment methods and use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students across the programme.
  • Set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide feedback to students.
  • Be responsible for administrative duties in areas such as outreach, timetabling, examinations, assessment of progress and student attendance. 
  • Contribute to activities in student recruitment, student placements, outreach work and careers information. 
  • Train, mentor and supervise teaching assistants and junior colleagues.
  • Stay up to date with scholarship in the field and to incorporate into their own and colleagues’ teaching practices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the implementation of assessment procedures and quality control processes.
  • Tackle issues affecting the quality of delivery within scope of own level of responsibility, referring more serious matters to others, as appropriate.
  • Promote a collegiate approach, be responsible for health and safety in own area and support equality of opportunity for, and equity of treatment of, staff and students.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria

  1. First Degree and/or Masters in relevant subject 
  2. PhD (or equivalent) level in chemistry 
  3. Demonstrate effective communication skills to educate and engage students, and convey key concepts using appropriate subject knowledge. 
  4. Experience and knowledge of teaching methods used in undergraduate laboratory settings, including a culture of teamwork, safety and responsibility in the lab.  
  5. Experience and knowledge of challenges within education sector and up-to-date teaching methods to address these. 
  6. Demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge, enabling them to perform teaching duties as required. 
  7. Interest in developing new teaching approaches including practicals integrated across subdisciplines and using virtual methods. 
  8. Experience in assessment and marking student work.  
  9. Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to build good rapport with other teaching staff and students.     

Desirable criteria

  1. Formal teaching qualification (e.g. AFHEA) 
  2. Experience in planning and delivering chemistry sessions for outreach that prove engaging and inspiring  
  3. Experience providing pastoral support and/or acting as a first-encounter counsellor for undergraduate students, detecting and addressing problems at an early stage.
