Job Description

This Group Manager (GM) position will lead the Transportation Technical Assistance and Engineering team within NREL's Center for Integrated Mobility Systems (CIMS), which focuses on technologies and methods that improve the efficiency of transportation components, vehicles and systems.

The GM will lead a group of 10-15 transportation researchers, project leaders, postdoctoral researchers, and/or student interns and support them from both a professional and technical perspective. Candidates must have a robust understanding of advanced transportation technologies and stakeholders, and have experience in the execution of projects that advance the engineering, analysis and  implementation of advanced transportation technologies.  A track record of engaging stakeholders and developing and executing technical assistance projects to support them is required.  


The Transportation Technical Assistance and Engineering team supports NREL’s vision of a clean energy future for the world by engaging with early adopters of technology to break down implementation barriers.  The team works closely with fleets, state and local governments and other industry partners to address specific technical challenges, compile lessons learned from early technology deployments, and develop training and other market transforming resources to accelerate adoption of advanced transportation technologies.

The GM will create a culture of inclusion, safety and quality.  Within this context, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to lead group business development strategy, develop new group capabilities, hire resources as needed, lead personnel and guide/engage group staff. The successful candidate will work closely with the CIMS leadership as well as the leadership across the laboratory.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and 9-years’ experience in technically related research discipline; Or, Master’s Degree and 7-years’ experience in technically related research discipline; Or, PhD and 4-years’ experience in technically related research discipline.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Experience with alternative energy vehicle technology, deployment, and policy.

  • Relationships with strategic industry and government leaders in transportation technology, implementation and policy.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Vehicle Technologies Office or other key CIMS clients.

  • Strong record of publications/presentations in relevant research areas.

  • Recognized as an expert on relevant topics among clients and stakeholders.

  • Previous experience working with fleets and end-users to implement advanced transportation technology is required.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Group Manager II / Annual Salary Range: $111,600 - $200,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
