Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm


Job Summary: Under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee, the Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the Ph.D. or other doctoral degree.


Additional Department Summary: The Department of American Studies at the University of Alabama seeks applications for a Dean’s Postdoctoral Research Associate position. Successful candidates should demonstrate experience working with underrepresented populations at the University and hold a terminal degree in American Studies or in a related field. Candidates must also exhibit a record of academic achievement with interdisciplinary methods in any area of American Studies, with preference given to those specializing in popular music, sports studies, and/or Southern studies. The College of Arts & Sciences and the Department of American Studies will establish a series of structured merit-based evaluations and a mentoring plan with the goal of transitioning successful candidates into tenure-track positions. The Dean’s Postdoctoral Research Associate positions have been established through a major College initiative begun in 2019 to promote an inclusive scholarly environment in which outstanding scholars support the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the College.

The minimum requirement is a Ph.D. at the time of the appointment. Initial appointments are for one year, with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity. Standard university hiring practices will govern any process of transitioning Postdoctoral Research Associates into tenure-track professor positions.
