The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Delaware seeks applications for the Annie Jump Cannon Postdoctoral research position. This fulltime benefited position was established in honor of the contributions to astronomy of Delaware native Annie Jump Cannon. The position is for a two-year period, with extension to a third-year contingent on performance and availability of funding.  The position is targeted to start in Fall 2024. 

The Annie Jump Cannon Post-doctoral Research appointment provides an opportunity for a highly qualified postdoctoral candidate to conduct independent research in any area of astrophysics. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Delaware maintains active research programs in observational and theoretical stellar physics, asteroseismology, exoplanet science, gamma ray astronomy and high energy astrophysics, and galactic and extragalactic astronomy (https://web.physics.udel.edu/research/research-projects ) for more details. Faculty in the department hold leadership positions in the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and lead research programs in its upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time. The Department is also a member of the IceCube and IceTop collaborations. The Bartol Research Institute, a research center within the Department, is part of the VERITAS and CTA collaborations. In addition. the Department hosts the Delaware Asteroseismic Research Center and the Whole Earth Telescope and is a member of the 


SARA consortium (see saraobservatory.org for more details). The department also maintains a collaboration with Mt. Cuba Observatory in Wilmington, DE (see mountcuba.org for more details). A requirement for the individual who fills this position is to participate in the public outreach at MCAO by contributing 2 public lectures per year.  

Major Responsibilities:  


  • Present and execute their 3-year research planThe plan should detail their research goals and present a clear path for completion in the 3-yeartimeframe. 

  • Present results in peer reviewed scientific journals. 

  • Present research results at national and international conferences 

  • Interact scientifically with one or more DPA faculty  

  • Present at least two public lectures per year at Mt. Cuba Observatory 


Qualifications: 


  • PhD in Astronomy, Physics or a related field 

Additional Information: Candidates must upload 1) a curriculum vitae including a list of recent publications, 2) a research proposal and statement of relevant research experience and past activities (limited to 3 pages with two additional pages for figures and tables. References do not count towards the limit), and 3) contact  information for three references (references will be requested at a later date). Candidates may also submit a brief diversity and/or broader impact statement.
