Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Systems Engineer plays an essential role in the delivery of frontline IT services to Division of the Sciences affiliates in support of research and administration computing.  Joining a team of Science Computing professionals, this position is a working engineer responsible for providing front line IT client support services.  Such services encompass areas primarily focused, but not limited to: research instrumentation support, desktop support, research IT consultation, and direct or coordinated support of centrally managed IT systems and services.  This position independently provides a full range of frontline IT services with an experienced level focus in providing consultation services and developing client based solutions that advance specific division, development, and research objectives.  A successful candidate is competent in the following: applying broad IT knowledge to support institutional objectives to resolve complex issues, advanced hardware and software concepts for medium projects of broad scope and complexity, and breadth of abilities aligned with central IT services and systems.  The position provides day-to-day client-based IT services and support.  Due to the nature of this role, the incumbent will be required to work on campus.

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $82,300 - $99,650/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

35% - Frontline Service and Support

  • Serves Science Division clients utilizing general computing to support the unique administrative and research needs of a Science Division, providing well versed customer service to: employees, faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows; primarily in support of research.
  • Provides client facing IT services and support relative to general and specialized computing workstations, research IT servers and instrumentation, central campus IT systems and service, etc.
  • Provides technical hands-on training to Science Division affiliates in using various hardware, software, systems, and services.
  • Documents and inventories all processes, procedures, hardware, software, services, and tasks.
  • Understands the central IT portfolio to coordinate support as needed.
  • Utilizes a ticket tracking system to prioritize and respond to incident and service requests.

35% - Device Management and Maintenance

  • Collaborates on the responsibility for a portfolio of highly complex devices; with systems comprising desktop, laptop, servers, storage devices, research instrumentation, etc.
  • Oversees the configuration, operation, and maintenance of all hardware and standardization of software integration.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and develops changes in device management and maintenance.
  • Recommends technical and specification requirements and standards.
  • Maintains security compliance for devices within the portfolio.

20% - Technical Consultation

  • Performs analysis of division, research, and/or user need; creating technical specifications for systems and services with broad impact at the divisional level.
  • Applies advanced hardware and software concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, and deploy complex workstations and associated processes and procedures.
  • Researches and recommends complex adoptions of new technology.
  • Consults and facilitates new technologies with faculty, researchers and project scientists.

10% - Additional Duties

  • Performs other duties as assigned. Some of which may include:
    • Understands and applies industry practices, community standards, and department/unit policies and procedures in depth. Documents and inventories all processes, procedures, hardware, software, programmatic services, and tasks.
    • May serve as technical lead for projects of moderate to broad scope.
    • Interprets and adopts Information Technology Services, UCSC campus, UC Office of the President, and/or regulation-based security policies to control access to networked resources.
    • Works with other ITS units on the development and delivery of shared IT services.
    • Works on ITS and campus committees and projects as requested, including new and improved services that support research and instructional needs, and central for the campus at large.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • In-depth knowledge of various areas of IT. Broad knowledge of the IT environment.
  • Demonstrated experienced knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Knowledge necessary to design, set up, operate, and correct malfunctions relating to client use, hardware, software, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience developing and using a technical toolkit for imaging and managing devices to ensure a standard of use that is consistent, secure, and accessible to clients; utilizing tools such as JAMF, Apple School Manager, BigFix, Apple Remote Desktop, TeamViewer, etc.
  • Experience supporting complex AV systems for specialized needs for instruction, research, and administrative efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs. Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • ITIL.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices, and policies including demonstrated experience securing client-based hardware and software.
  • Technical skill to develop, implement ,and test disaster recovery functions using backup technologies.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Agile.
  • Lean Six Sigma.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
