Department Description

The UC Davis Genome Center in the College of Biological Sciences coordinates interdisciplinary research in the areas of genomics, metabolomics, proteomics and bioinformatics, and is involved in the training of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Annual funding is approximately $21 million from multiple sources. Approximately $6-7 million of annual expenditures come through the Center’s six service Cores, which provide genomic technologies to approximately 700 customers both on and off-campus.

This position supports the work and lab of Genome Center Director Blake Meyers, which studies plant genetics, genomics, and RNA biology. It also works on behalf of the entire Genome Center.



Job Summary

The Director of Strategic Initiatives and Research Funding (SIRF) works both under general direction of the Director of the Genome Center (GC) and independently to identify, develop and maintain collaborative research partnerships across campus and with other universities, national labs, governmental and external constituents, international and domestic partners, and other entities. Applies comprehensive knowledge of Genome Center research activities and initiatives and dynamic funding landscape to develop strategies and programs to strengthen the Genome Center’s position and competitiveness at the forefront of major national and international collaborative initiatives across the full spectrum of research disciplines. Catalyzes and incentivizes research activity within the Center and across campus through development of networks and research partnerships, information exchange, identifying strategic funding opportunities, and design and implementation of programming. Write grant proposals and manages an independent research program, while working closely with the Genome Center Director to co-manage that research program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Advanced research degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent education and research experience to comprehend scientific and technical concepts and sponsored research practices.

·       Extensive leadership and networking experience to identify and collaborate effectively with appropriate individuals in the development and cultivation of research projects and initiatives.

·       Highly experienced using negotiation, interpersonal, and communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships across various levels (e.g. academia, industry, funders/sponsors, and faculty, staff and students) and to encourage and achieve consensus when issues involve multiple organizations and impact the institution.

·       Experience formulating, developing, and overseeing grant proposals and initiatives for individual investigators, multi-PI teams, and multi-campus teams. Experience managing complex research issues and facilitating or coordinating research initiatives at a research center, research university, or large funding agency.

·       Experience to examine work processes and organizational structures for development or revision and to accommodate change requirements.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Extensive knowledge and familiarity with funding cycles and decision-making procedures of state, federal, and private industry research sponsors, including time management and organizational skills to prioritize and effectively manage multiple, simultaneous projects with conflicting deadlines and follow tasks to completion with a high level of independence.

·       Ability to convey complex, technical, and educational information in a clear and concise manner tailored to the potential collaborator, partner or sponsor needs and interests. Scientific or technical writing and reading comprehension skills to produce professional correspondence, documents, and presentations and to present technical material concisely and clearly to diverse groups and individuals (requiring proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software and internet research).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Comprehensive knowledge of present and emerging research and scholarship strengths of interest in genomics and relevant to the Genome Center.

·       Knowledge, understanding, and comprehension of the UC Davis’ mission and the University’s organization, operations and policy issues.

·       Knowledge of best practices and models for successful partnerships between academia and other entities.

·       Knowledge of University of California policies related to conflict of interest, conflict of commitment and other areas that relate to university engagement with private entities and to technology transfer.
