Python Junior Developer – Ruminant Farm Systems

Cornell University

Job Description

Python Junior Developer – Ruminant Farm Systems (Hybrid/Remote)

*No Visa Sponsorship is available for this position.

About the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals, agriculture, and human health. The Department’s 16 faculty members, many internationally recognized, have diverse interests in animal management, breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, and growth biology.

The Department of Animal Science’s mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension and outreach.

The Ruminant Farm Systems (RuFaS) is a next generation, dairy farm model coded in Python and managed within the Department of Animal Science. Scientists and industry professionals will use RuFaS to investigate and direct implementation of sustainable farming solutions. The project is led by a national team of university, USDA, and industry scientists. The design and structure of the model prioritizes transparency, flexibility, and adaptability so that connections between animal, manure, soil, and crop nutrient cycling can be simulated under a diverse array of farming practices and environmental conditions. RuFaS has been in development for 4 years resulting in substantial progress towards the release of the first version of the model. Our department is seeking an experienced Python Developer to add new functionality and update some exiting components to complete the first version of the model. To accomplish these objectives, the applicant will work closely with the current team of 8-10 developers and software engineers (both CS students and professional SW engineers) and a strong support team of subject-matter experts including 3 postdoctoral scholars, 2 PhD students and several university faculty and USDA scientists.
