Job Description

This is a 100% five (5) month Contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs and funding of the department.

CASPO is comprised of three diverse research units, AS (Atmospheric Science), PO (Physical Oceanography) and CR (Climate Research). Each unit was its own independent division until the three were combined into CASPO in 2007. The CASPO Business Office is the support hub of the research efforts of 55 academics in various titles (Professor, Research Scientist, Project Scientist and Specialist), several Research Associates/Visiting Scholars, 40 postdoctoral scholars, 44 graduate students and 130 staff. CASPO manages approximately $50 million in federal, state and private funds annually and manages an additional $2.8 million in discretionary funds. It occupies 51,000 square feet of space, including instructional and research support space, administrative offices and research labs. CASPO is home to the Instrumental Development Group (IDG), a recharge facility that builds and deploys a third of the world's data collecting sounding observers (SOLOs) and 7 to 10 ocean-going gliders, annually. In addition, CASPO manages the newly formed Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). The CASPO Business Office is responsible for managing OA Section funds and activities, including budgeting and expenses related to new Researcher startup funding, bridge funding, seminars, student recruitment and meetings, building maintenance for Nierenberg Hall, OAR/Keck, and O&A space in MESOM, DeepSea Drilling and Seaweed Canyon. The majority of SIO's NOAA Cooperative Institute (CIMEAS) funding runs through CASPO and requires additional coordination with program staff. The Oceans and Atmosphere (OA) section is the largest of SIO's three sections comprising the CASPO and MPL Divisions.
