The Alzheimer’s Center at Temple (ACT) has been created with the appointment of Dr. Domenico Praticò as the Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation Chair for Alzheimer’s Research. ACT will integrate research, training, clinical and educational activities in order to study the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, discover the mechanisms responsible for their onset and progression, and develop effective treatment strategies with the ultimate goal of curing those diseases. ACT will build upon the long-standing tradition of excellence in biomedical research and education of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.

The Associate Scientist performs experiments and cerebrovascular dysfunction studies in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders on cell culture and animal models. Identifies and analyzes complex problems; exercises independent judgment; selects an appropriate course of action that typically involves change or innovation in existing procedures or techniques. Makes complex decisions within broad guidelines.

Establishes solid relationships with internal and external contacts in order to: assesses lab’s longer-term needs; acts as a communication conduit on matters of operational and strategic importance; and makes formal presentations.

Responsibilities include:
•    Perform cell culture and cell experiments, ECIS assays, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, amyloid peptides treatment and characterization, western blotting, PCR, confocal and fluorescent microscopy, and other assays. 
•    Perform, if needed, analysis of animal samples for specific experimental models based on funded grants for the lab, as well as organ collection and brain studies in vascular cells as well as other brain cells/tissue. 
•    Maintain records on all experiments and troubleshoot experiments with the PI based on predetermined research objectives.
•    Autonomously manage day-to-day research activities requiring in-depth technical knowledge and experience in neurovascular dysfunction in vitro and in vivo and Alzheimer’s/cerebrovascular dysfunction models.
•    Design and execute experimental protocols for assigned projects and serve as an authoritative source on research practices, precedents, theory, and principles
•    Assist the PI in writing manuscripts and grant applications.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:
Doctorate's degree and at least four years directly related Postdoctoral experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
 
Required Skills & Abilities:
•    Demonstrated proficiency in research techniques detailed above
•    Demonstrated computer skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office software programs, including MS Word and advanced MS Excel functions. 
•    Ability to manage projects, working knowledge of all applicable computer software programs
•    Demonstrated management skills (including planning, negotiation, and communication skills). 
•    Knowledge of applicable professional principles, extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures, and financial and budgeting principles.
•    Ability to provide direction/supervision to students and staff
