Postdoctoral Research Associate - Proteomics for Microbe and Plant Systems

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Job Description

Requisition Id 11893

Overview:

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Group in the Biosciences Division, Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist ORNL staff with experimental design and execution of research campaigns to integrate experimental and bioinformatic approaches for the systems-biology characterization of microbial and plant systems
  • Focus will be given to proteomic, phosphoproteomics, and metaproteomic approaches that will be developed, optimized, and deployed for deep, agnostic measurements of complex microbial and plant systems.
  • Collaborate with an array of collaborators both internal and external to ORNL to integrate experimental design to address complex science questions that require state-of-the-art omics approaches.
  • Develop and deploy customized sample preparation approaches, high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, and advanced bioinformatics approaches for microbial and plant systems.
  • Coordinate and execute functional genomics measurements on these systems.
  • Data mining and dissemination of large-scale omics datasets.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Chemical or Biological Sciences with particular focus on microbiology, molecular biology, systems biology,  or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Demonstrated expertise in multikingdom systems-biology research, in particular involving specialized sample prep methods, proteomics and/or metabolomics, and associated bioinformatics.
  • Demonstrated record of expertise in experimental approaches for both microbial and plant research and a track record of contributions to peer-reviewed publications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in advanced sample preparation techniques for proteomics and phosphoproteomics from complex environmental samples.
  • Expertise generating and evaluating metatranscriptomic or metaproteomic data types.
  • Expertise in computational informatics for data mining and visualization. Experience with large-scale analyses of genomes, transcriptomes, and/or proteomes would be valuable, but not required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
