Position overview
Position title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Habitat Connectivity Mapping for Conservation Planning
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay based on the individuals Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See the salary scale titled, Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee /Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct -Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $64,480 - $72,000.
Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.
Position duration: Maximum Duration of Service in a Postdoctoral Title: Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time and the initial appointment is for a minimum of two years, with the possibility of reappointment. The total duration of an individuals postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution.

Position Description
The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the Postdoctoral Fellow in Habitat Connectivity Mapping for Conservation. Under the direction of Prof. Natalia Ocampo-Peuela (Conservation Ecology Research Group), the Postdoctoral Fellow will use novel habitat connectivity models developed by Ocampo-Peuelas group, in collaboration with computer scientists, to map habitat connectivity for birds with the aim of informing conservation decisions in tropical regions. The fellow will also participate in other projects involving the further refinement of habitat connectivity models and their application to other taxa and regions, in collaboration with Ocampo-Peuelas group and close collaborator Prof. Luca de Alfaro (UCSC Computer Science). The fellow will take the lead in spatial and statistical analysis and in writing papers to be submitted to high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, and participate in outreach and scientific dissemination activities for the project.
Candidates with the following experience are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Extensive experience with coding in Python, R, or other programming languages.
  • Experience with spatial analyses using ArcMap or similar mapping software.
  • Experience with habitat connectivity models.
  • Evidence of strong scholarship in high-impact peer-reviewed publications.
  • Strong collaborative and social skills.
  • Knowledge of bird ecology.

The following skills are preferred:
  • Bird movement ecology
  • Tropical bird ecology
