The Bates College Department of Earth and Climate Sciences (EACS) and the Department of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for a jointly-appointed, tenure-track Assistant Professor in computational Atmospheric, Oceanic, or Climate modeling, beginning August 2024. The new faculty member will be expected to teach at the intersection of earth and climate sciences and physics and to establish an active research program involving undergraduate students.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education and a commitment to collaboration, collegiality and building an inclusive academic environment. Candidates with demonstrated success in teaching and/or supporting marginalized, first generation and historically underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates should show promise of excellence and innovation in both teaching and scholarship.

Candidate Credentials: Candidates should have completed their PhD in atmospheric, oceanic, climate sciences, or a related field, from any appropriate department (e.g. Earth and Planetary Sciences, Physics, Ocean Science, Atmospheric Science, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical/Ocean Engineering) by August 1, 2024. Postdoctoral experience is seen as beneficial but is not required. The successful candidate will teach 5 classes per year split evenly between EACS and Physics. Potential contributions to the curricula of EACS and Physics include an introductory course on the climate system, a cross-listed 200-level course in climate modeling, and/or relevant 300-level Physics or EACS courses.

Significant lab space and start-up funding is available, as is a wide range of existing equipment and materials, as well as the support of a professional machinist and machine shop. Multiple full-time assistants in instruction provide logistical support for the introductory laboratories in both departments. College-wide facilities include a staff-supported Leavitt High Performance Computing Center , Visualization Lab , and a Digital Media Studio , among other facilities.

The standard teaching load at Bates is 5 courses per academic year, reduced to four courses in the first year of a tenure-track appointment.
