The Physics Department at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology (South Dakota Mines) invites applications for a post-doctoral research position with its Particle Physics and Astrophysics group. The successful applicant will primarily work on the DUNE experiment. The successful candidate will play a key role within the DUNE photon detection consortium (PDS), working on the application of the power over fiber (PoF) technology for the DUNE Vertical Drift PDS. The candidate will play a key role in the development of a PoF assembly and testing center for the DUNE FD2 PDS at South Dakota Mines. The successful candidate will also be involved in the commissioning, operation, simulation, and/or data analysis of the prototypes of DUNE located at CERN.
South Dakota Mines is located less than an hour’s drive away from Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), home of the DUNE far detector, the LZ dark matter experiment, and the underground accelerator CASPAR, as well as the MAJORANA Demonstrator. DUNE is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino experiment and is currently under construction at SURF.
The South Dakota Mines Physics Department has a strong group focusing on underground physics experiments, with seven faculty collaborating on experiments on direct detection of dark matter, neutrino oscillations, cosmic neutrinos, ultrahigh-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays, and nuclear astrophysics, providing a rich environment for research in nuclear/particle physics and cosmology.
The South Dakota Mines group is also involved in the analysis of a large amount of data produced by MicroBooNE, ProtoDUNE, and recently the group has joined the T2K experiment, providing the successful candidate with opportunities to lead publication of physics results on a short timescale.
Starting date is expected as soon as February 1 of 2024.
A PhD in high-energy physics or a related field is required. Preferred qualifications: 1) Experience with design, construction, and operation of particle physics detectors. 2) Experience with data analysis of high energy physics experiments.
* Final candidates will be required to provide three letters of recommendation to Assistant Professor David Martinez *
