Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Center for Advanced Biotechnology & Medicine (CABM). Under the immediate guidance and direction of the Principal Investigator, this individual will provide general laboratory and experimental support for research projects in Dr. Tina Liu’s lab. The Liu lab seeks to explore the complex and fascinating biology underlying microbial defense pathways and engineer them for biomedical and biotechnological applications (Link: https://sites.rutgers.edu/tina-liu-lab ).
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory.
  • Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
  • Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects.
  • Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s).
  • One year of research study experience.
  • An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with basic molecular biology, microbiology, and/or protein expression/purification workflows.
  • Additional college-level laboratory coursework, technical training, or research lab experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or other related scientific field.
  • The ability to learn and execute basic molecular biology or biochemistry protocols (e.g. PCR, cell culture, protein purification, DNA/RNA purification, gel electrophoresis, buffer preparation, media preparation).

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Procedures may occasionally run several hours in succession, with only short breaks.
  • Some procedures must be performed in cold or warm rooms.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 lb.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Following universal laboratory safety precautions is mandatory.

Immunization Requirements
