Colorado State University is a land-grant institution with a strong commitment to scholarly excellence and to research that impacts society and addresses global problems. The Department of Physics at Colorado State University has 20 faculty members with research programs in atomic, molecular, and optical physics; condensed matter physics; and high-energy physics and particle astrophysics. The Data Science Program at CSU is an interdisciplinary program that currently includes core faculty in the departments of Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics and is expanding to include faculty members in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physics, and Psychology. The Data Science Undergraduate Major has over 110 students enrolled, while the Data Science Research Institute has affiliated faculty from over 25 departments and research units who have connections to data science as part of their research programs.

Position Summary
The Department of Physics, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor with research interests in Computational Physics and Data Science with a focus on research that overlaps, or complements, ongoing research in the department (Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, Condensed-Matter Physics, or High-Energy and Astro-Particle Physics). Exceptional candidates will be considered for positions with a more senior rank.
The appointed individual is expected to: (1) build a forward looking and internationally recognized research program within the framework of their individual areas of interest and expertise that is consistent with the goals and objectives of a university environment; (2) actively participate in the teaching/mentoring/advising of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers in both Physics and Data Science; (3) participate in department and university administrative governance functions; (4) engage in scholarly/professional endeavors to support their continued growth as a teacher and a scholar; and (5) fulfill the general faculty responsibilities in the Academic Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual, https://facultycouncil.colostate.edu/faculty-manual/ .

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in physics or a related field.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Scholarly/professional experience and record of past research accomplishments. This includes postdoctoral and/or substantial experience beyond the Ph.D. Candidates should have an excellent record of research that includes significant publications in refereed journals. Evidence of initiative and leadership in research in physics, utilizing data science techniques, and the potential to develop a vigorous, internationally recognized research program is essential.
  • A proposed research plan that overlaps, or complements, research in the department and that can lead to an internationally recognized program.
  • Potential to contribute to teaching/mentoring/advising undergraduate and graduate students in both Physics and Data Science.
  • Ability to contribute to the diversity, equity, and inclusion goals of the department.
