Function/Duties of Position

The successful candidate will work independently to investigate the molecular genetic mechanisms supporting polymicrobial pathogenesis in oral dysbiotic diseases. He/she will be responsible for most of the planning, implementation, and data interpretation associated with his/her research. Thus, the candidate will be expected to work independently with attention to detail and strong record-keeping. The goal is to understand how certain dysbiotic communities dysregulate the immune response, especially via the production of gene products that target host genetic pathways or other members of the oral microbiome. To achieve this goal, we are particularly interested to improve the genetic tractability of a variety of understudied species in the oral microbiota. Typical laboratory techniques often require expertise with northern blot, western blot, protein expression/purification, coimmunoprecipitation, gene expression analysis, targeted mutagenesis, microscopy, and bacterial community analysis.

Demonstrable experience with the human microbiome as well as these techniques is preferred. As a postdoctoral scholar, the candidate may also be involved with the training and supervision of students and junior staff as well as play an integral role in the management and supply ordering for the laboratory. Assistance with the development and preparation of grants/manuscripts will also be expected.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in (genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or another relevant field)
  • Demonstrable experience with some or all of the following: bacterial genetics, protein chemistry, proteomics, coimmunoprecipitation, EMSA, RNA purification/analysis, gene expression/transcriptomics, bacterial community analysis, cell culture, and FACS
  • Grant and/or manuscript preparation experience
  • Planning, implementation, and data interpretation experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Organizational and time management skills that maintain timeliness of work and accurate prioritization
  • Ability to train and supervise students and junior staff Attention to detail and strong record keeping experience/skills
  • Able to conduct research in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced research environment, occasionally with tight deadlines
  • Able to work independently and exhibit self-motivation
  • Able to stand at a lab bench, sit at a microscope, perform laboratory manipulations, move and carry light lab equipment, perform image analysis experiments, operate computers and related software, communicate easily with co-workers and support staff, assist and instruct other lab members with scientific methods

Preferred Qualifications
