The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has great strength in all major areas of mathematics. It is also unique in that it has an established MS program in data science with enrollment of 90 students and is granting doctoral degrees in the area of data science. The faculty are supported by multiple grants from federal agencies such as NSF, NSA and NASA, and have established collaborations with research centers and departments in the Capital Region and beyond.


Job Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University at Albany, the State University of New York, seeks an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in mathematics related to Data Science. The Department has great strength in the theoretic background as well as the application of Data Science. Establishing an undergraduate program and expanding the current graduate program in Data Science is a part of the Department's strategic planning.

An Assistant Professor in the Department is expected to perform the following duties during their employment:

  • Research: publish original research papers in well-recognized journals, present research results at professional meetings, seek external funding to support their research, and supervise the research of PhD students.
  • Teaching: teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of Data Science and AI.
  • Service: advise undergraduate majors, serve on various departmental committees, and participate in certain activities of the profession (such as refereeing papers and reviewing grant proposals).


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by May 31, 2024. Candidates who will not hold the degree by this date will not be considered. 
  • Applicants must demonstrate potential for research in mathematics related to Data Science and AI. 
  • A demonstrated potential for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Data Science.
  • A demonstrated potential for seeking external funding for their research.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A record of research in mathematics related to data science and AI.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses.
  • Strong potential in applying for and obtaining external funding.
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated potential of collaboration with existing faculty in the Department.
