Job Description


The Gourdie lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion – Roanoke, VA is seeking highly motivated Research Associate/Sr. Research Associate to work on an exciting new use of peptides targeting the voltage gated sodium channel Scn1b and Cx43 in treating arrhythmia, including delivery of such therapeutics with extracellular vesicles (exosomes). Publications in last 2 years include in Nature Biotechnology (IF=68), Circulation Research (IF=20), and Nature Communications (IF=17). Lab members, including the lab manager, have contributed as inventors in 14 licensed patents from the lab over the last decade.

The duties of the role will include but may not be limited to the following:
• Maintaining accurate and confidential records used for conducting and monitoring multiple studies.
• Managing laboratory purchasing and finances, including maintaining lab inventory records
• Project Management – Training and supervising research personnel to organize and conduct study sessions.
• Recruitment, selection and hiring of staff, and assists in the hiring decisions of other key personnel such as postdoctoral associates.
• Participating in research team meetings to report on research progress, improve data collection processes, assist with problem solving, and address protocol issues that arise during the course of research studies.
• Conducting literature searches to gather background information for use by the Principal Investigator (PI) and other research team members in developing, evaluating, completing and submission of grant proposals and publications.
• Collecting and entering data from research participants per approved protocols, standard operating procedures, and experiment instructions.

Would consider position of Senior Research Associate if candidate meets PhD qualifications.


Required Qualifications

• MA/MS in biology, chemistry or related field, or bachelor's degree with significant related experience.
• Demonstrated data management experience.
• Demonstrated organizational skills or experience with data management.
• Desire to succeed in a fast-paced research environment with multiple duties.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, organizational skills, and excellent communication skills.
• The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
• Technical skills in cell culture and microscopy, especially confocal and EM microscopy


Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in related field with demonstrated supervisory or management experience.
• Experience with basic laboratory protocols including proper handling of subject specimens, data collection, and data management.
• Technical skills in protein and molecular methods including Western blotting, PCR, cloning and bacterial and eukaryotic expression systems
• Experience with mouse models including husbandry, handling and tissue collection for molecular and histological analyses
• Experience with working and managing a BSL-2 work space and maintaining a liquid nitrogen cell inventory
• Experience with data analysis software (R, Matlab, SPSS, etc.)
• Experience in data management or database management.
