Job Summary

Under the supervision of Cemal Kafadar, Professor of History and Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Research Assistant will be working closely with the Director and Associate Director with several aspects of developing the center's new interdisciplinary initiative on the history of seismicity and other aspects of the emerging field of disaster studies. This initiative is triggered by present concerns arising from the recent devastation in Turkey and Syria as well as the urgent need to develop our understanding of the history of seismicity in the region. The RA will liaise with other members of the center working on the project including faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

Position Description

Job duties will include:

· Conducting qualitative and quantitative research and data collection, making use of selected methodology and materials, field work, library research, statistical analysis, or other investigative techniques. Processes, organizes and summarizes data, submits periodic reports of project status to supervisor, collates, organizes, and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, progress reports, articles or other documents for publication and/or presentation.

· Researching possible funding opportunities for the project and working closely with faculty, students, and postdocs to develop grant proposal narratives, funding proposals and budgeting materials.

· Organizing a lecture series of 6-8 events related to the project; canvassing and securing guest speakers, sending invitations and securing dates, organizing event logistics, participating in seminar discussions, and engaging with speakers as part of the hosting team.

· General administrative duties in support of the project, and serving as liaison to 4-5 graduate students and 2 postdoctoral fellows appointed to the project, and other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

One or more years of research experience in a social science field.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Competence in Arabic and/or Turkish. Interest in disaster studies in the broader Middle East Region. Strong writing skills and familiarity with archival sources. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Additional Information

This is a ten-month, part-time (25 hours per week), term position.
