Position Description:

The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine invites applications for a 100% postdoctoral position on a collaborative project within the Human Brain Research Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Multimodal Imaging in Neurological Disorders lab in the Department of Radiology. The project is aimed at understanding the brain mechanisms underlying misophonia using multimodal measurement techniques (fMRI/EEG/intracranial EEG) to build a comprehensive model of misophonia.

The current project will investigate the factors that drive the aberrant brain activity and distress evoked by trigger sounds in misophonia. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) will be used as measurement techniques, along with machine learning approaches. In addition, The Human Brain Research Lab at Iowa offers a unique opportunity to record single units and local field potentials (LFPs) from a range of cortical and subcortical brain areas, using intracranially implanted surface and depth electrodes in human patient volunteers undergoing neurosurgical treatment. Successful candidates will be trained on analyses for intracranial techniques – prior experience in this particular area is not necessary.

The multidisciplinary project requires both experimental and computational skills. The ideal candidate will have a PhD degree in Neuroscience/Neuroimaging. Experience in analyzing either fMRI or EEG data using general linear modelling (GLM) and machine learning algorithms will be an added advantage. The candidate is expected to be able to design fMRI experiments and should have programming skills in Matlab and/or Python.

Main duties and responsibilities
