Sarah Dodson-Robinson (University of Delaware) and Charlotte Haley (Argonne National Laboratory) invite applications for a jointly supervised postdoctoral scholar position in the University of Delaware Department of Physics and Astronomy. The successful candidate will develop and test statistical methods for suppressing false positives in Doppler planet searches. Experience with Fourier analysis techniques and/or the Julia language is a plus. The initial annual salary is $50,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package, with an additional $2,500 per year budget for research expenses and travel support. The position is available for three years.

Candidates must upload 1) a curriculum vita, 2) a list of publications, 3) a statement providing a summary of current and previous research (3 pages excluding references), and 4) the names of 3 referees, who will be contacted if references are requested.  

Major Responsibilities  


  • Help develop, test, and distribute software for Fourier analysis of time series, with a focus on planet searches 

  • Document software in both refereed journal articles and tutorials for new users 

  • Report and present research at conferences 

  • During one academic semester per year, spend about 10 hours per week helping to supervise undergraduate research 


 Qualifications  


  • Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or statistics 

  • Research experience in one or more of the following: planet searches, time series, Fourier analysis, astrostatistics 

  • Ability to write scientific reports and manuscripts based on original research 

  • Ability to develop and deliver professional scientific presentations 


  • Ability to work with scientists at all levels, including faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates
