| School/College/Division Description | The School of Freshwater Sciences (SFS) at UWM is the only school in the nation dedicated solely to the study of freshwater issues. Its interdisciplinary research and education programs link science with action and are integrated across five major areas: freshwater system dynamics; human and ecosystem health; freshwater technology; freshwater economics, policy, and management; and climate and atmospheric sciences. It is the School’s goal to be recognized world-wide as the source of expert knowledge on water issues and a catalyst for great ideas that change how people think about and manage water resources. The School of Freshwater Sciences is based in the heart of Milwaukee’s Latinx community in the Harbor District. Our school facilities, including research vessels and laboratories, have direct access to the confluence of the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic Rivers and Lake Michigan. | Job Summary | The School of Freshwater Sciences seeks a tenure-track faculty member who will join a highly interdisciplinary program to contribute to limnological research and education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The successful candidate’s research will focus on aquatic ecosystem dynamics, with an emphasis on Lake Michigan and other Great Lakes. The successful candidate will be prepared to: 1. Maintain or develop a high-quality, extramurally funded Research program focused on vessel-based large lake limnology, primarily on the Laurentian Great Lakes. Potential areas of specialization include biogeochemistry, plankton ecology, physical limnology, and food web dynamics. A valued skill is the ability to conduct research within a multidisciplinary context, leveraging other areas of strength within SFS, including atmospheric science, policy and economics, microbiology, genomics, toxicology, fisheries science, atmospheric science, policy, and economics. 2. Develop and Teach courses in aquatic sciences, contributing to the continuing growth of the School’s MS and PhD graduate programs and its undergraduate curriculum in Freshwater Sciences. The successful candidate will also be prepared to mentor and support graduate and undergraduate students. 3. As part of the Service duties commensurate with a tenure-track appointment, work with federal, state, municipal, and non-governmental agencies, and professional societies, to advance public education and promote science-informed management of aquatic resources, as well as perform administrative duties within UWM. Performance of Duties Research (Expectation of 50% of Time) UWM seeks a tenure-track faculty member with expertise in the dynamics of large aquatic systems and their connected urban and rural watersheds. This may include experience in large lake limnology as well as oceanography. The successful candidate will develop a high-quality research program with national and international recognition. This will include • Obtaining extramural grant funding for a state-of-the-science large lake research program that addresses both applied and basic research questions. This will take advantage of the School’s diverse research facilities, including a fully equipped large lake research vessel (place link to both the new and current vessel) • Collaboration with other scientists and policy / economics experts. • Engaging in sponsored research with local, state, and regional partners with a focus on the needs of the State of Wisconsin. • Communicating and disseminating research findings through peer-reviewed publications, presentations at scientific/professional meetings, media interviews, and talks for the general public. • Providing hands-on research experiences for future scientists at the undergraduate and graduate levels. • Representing the School of Freshwater Sciences in this area of expertise within the local, state, regional, national, and international communities, including government, NGOs, universities, and professional societies. Teaching (Expectation of 40% of Time) The School of Freshwater Sciences has offered an undergraduate major and minor in freshwater sciences since fall 2021, which is complemented by its freshwater Masters and PhD programs that were established in 2009. The university seeks to continue to grow enrollment in all areas, and freshwater sciences is an area of increasing interest among students. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support student learning by teaching aquatic science core courses and aid in the development of transformative learning opportunities that embrace STEM education and outreach. To this end, the successful candidate is expected to: • Provide undergraduate and/or graduate-level instruction supporting the Freshwater Sciences discipline at UWM, as required programmatically by the School of Freshwater Sciences; • Develop innovative and effective teaching methods, including experiential learning. • Mentor students pursuing completion of School of Freshwater Sciences degree programs and career advancement; • Recruit and mentor students from underrepresented communities as they navigate their way through STEM disciplines, with an eye towards retention and success; • Participate in the growth of the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin ((https://freshwater.wisconsin.edu), and potentially develop and teach courses aimed at students from across UW System campuses. Service (Expectation of 10% of Time) The Wisconsin Idea within the UW System holds that university research should be applied to solve problems and improve health, quality of life, the environment, and agriculture for all citizens of the state. The successful candidate will help address pressing challenges for the State of Wisconsin by engaging with Wisconsin state agencies and external partners on issues related to management of the state’s aquatic resources, including Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The appointed candidate will perform administrative duties as part of Service duties commensurate with a tenure-track appointment in the School. To this end, the successful candidate is expected to: • Participate and provide leadership in Program/School/University committees. • Act in an advisory capacity to local organizations and serve on committees external to UWM. • Present research findings and participate in professional societies. • Collaborate with municipal, state and federal agencies on research that addresses applied aquatic resource management challenges. |
| Minimum Qualifications | Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in limnology, biology, marine biology, oceanography, ecology, or related field by time of appointment. |
| Preferred Qualifications | Preferred Qualifications: • Postdoctoral or other relevant work experience. • Research experience on large lakes and/or marine systems. • Experience with vessel-based research • Mechanistic modeling skills that apply to aquatic ecosystem dynamic processes (physical, biological, biogeochemical). • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. This includes the ability to interpret scientific research in a policy and/or economic context. • Successful proposal writing and extramural funding. • Record of publications in respected peer-reviewed academic journals. • Experience with high-quality teaching and experiential learning engagement with diverse students at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. • Experience in professional and community service. • The ability to work with community partners with diverse backgrounds, knowledge, and interests. |
| Target Salary Range | Minimum of $80,000. Final salary offer contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to the position. There is also a negotiable start-up funds amount. |
