Assistant Professor, Extragalactic Astronomy

Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University (GSU) is recruiting an astronomer working in extragalactic research for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a start date in Fall 2024. The new hire will be expected to develop an innovative, externally funded research program in an area that complements current departmental strengths (https://physics-astro.gsu.edu ).  They will also be expected to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students and to take an active role in service activities within GSU and the wider profession.

Georgia State University is a large, urban research university in Atlanta and a minority-serving institution.  Training students to become creative and independent scientists and teachers in a multicultural environment is a major focus of our department.

The astronomy group comprises nearly half of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.  Currently, there are 10 faculty members conducting research in extragalactic astronomy, stellar astronomy, and solar physics.  GSU owns and operates the CHARA array, leads the SMARTS Consortium that operates four 1m-class telescopes at CTIO, and is a partner in the Apache Point Observatory 3.5m telescope.  The department also has its own instrument shop and high-performance computing cluster.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field, and postdoctoral research experience. A complete application will include: 1) a cover letter, 2) a curriculum vitae with a publication list, 3) a statement of research interests that describes how the proposed research will complement existing research at GSU, 4) a statement of teaching and mentoring philosophy, and 5) contact information for at least three professional references. Applicants are especially encouraged to outline how their professional and academic experiences have prepared them to support and apply Georgia State’s mission and core values, which are described in our strategic plan (https://strategic.gsu.edu/ ).

Applications should be sent as a single PDF file via email to exgal@gsu.edu . Questions regarding the position may be addressed to the search committee chair, Dr. Misty Bentz, at bentz@gsu.edu .

Applications received by Friday November 3, 2023, will receive full consideration. An offer of employment will be conditional on background verification. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
