We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Single Crystal Diffraction Group in the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   If you are passionate about advancing the field of neutron diffraction through AI/ML and UX application development, this is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in neutron crystallography.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

• Be part of the team to develop advanced machine learning models and user experience (UX) applications tailored for single crystal neutron diffraction.
• Utilize HPC and Edge computing to accelerate the analysis of multidimensional volumetric data, thereby enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of live data reduction and analysis.
• Ensure the seamless integration of the developed AI and machine learning algorithms into a UX-based platform, providing an interactive graphic user interface for neutron experiments.

Basic Qualifications:

• A PhD in computer science and engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science, with a strong background in AI and machine learning or a related field completed within the last 5 years

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency in python and practical experience in advanced AI and machine learning techniques, such as deep learning, reinforcement learning and graphic user interface development.
• Experience with compiled programming languages such as C++ is a plus.
• Background in neutron / X-ray/electron diffraction experiments, crystallography, or related fields is a plus.
• Experience with analysis of single crystal diffraction data, programming experience with data reduction/analysis/modeling.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
