The Department of Risk Management & Insurance manages the complex array of university-wide risk and insurance related matters, including assessing the risks and exposures undertaken by students, researchers, faculty and staff; procuring and maintaining commercial insurance products and services; managing self-insurance programs; managing international travel risks and acting as a university-wide resource for risk management and insurance information.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Claims Coordinator with hands-on workers’ compensation and general liability claims experience, capable of timely handling of matters from incident through resolution, directly or with the assistance of Rutgers’ Third-Party Administrator as needed. Reports to the Assistant Director of Risk Management – Contracts and Claims, and works in close collaboration with Rutgers Occupational Health, Human Resources, Student Health Insurance and Environmental Health and Safety.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Responsible for workers compensation investigation and litigation support, in coordination with Rutgers’ Third-Party Administrator and Rutgers’ Occupational Health Department. Will assist with investigations to determine compensability, assist with the supervision of TPA claims resolution and reporting. Will resolve billing/collection disputes with providers and coordination with other programs. Requires knowledge of SIU and other fraud prevention techniques, Medicare reporting, Medicare set-asides, Medicaid, Secondary Injury, excess, lien negotiations, recovery and subrogation actions, excess, Secondary Injury and knowledge of New Jersey workers’ compensation laws and medical terminology.
  • Responsible for gathering, unifying, and reporting information for workers’ compensation matters, including absences due to injury, OSHA and other statutory reporting.
  • Responsible for assisting general liability and auto claims handling, either directly for nominal claims, or in conjunction with Rutgers’ Third-Party Administrator and the Assistant Director – Contracts and Claims, for more complex claims.
  • Real time reviews of accident alerts and police reports relating to employees, students, the public, or other stakeholders in a timely manner to activate the proper claims response.
  • Responsible for assisting various stakeholders with the implementation of claims reduction strategies for workers’ compensation, auto and general liabilities.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Evidence of a strong work ethic with the capacity to complete tasks from start to finish without intensive supervision and as necessary in an office or hybrid environment.
  • Knowledge and interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty and staff, students, parents, the public and government agencies.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse populations in a respectful and equitable manner.
  • Ability to manage constantly changing environments, with competing time constraints and goals.
  • Must show proof of continuing education in relevant insurance training or an insurance designation.
  • Must show proficiency in medical terminology and common injuries.
  • Current valid Driver’s license in case investigations or assistance is required.
  • Proficiency with computer software, hardware, data management, and social media.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of experience preferred.
  • Previous experience working with an entity subject to the Tort Claims Act or similar statutes.
  • Previous experience working with New Jersey’s Workers Compensation and related statutes.
  • Previous experience with a major insurance carrier or TPA, or similar position with an active claims handling caseload.
Equipment Utilized
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft, claims handling software and able to independently solve software, hardware, printer, scanner, internet problems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Travel may be required on short notice to assist in an investigation or an emergency.
