Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Assistant Dean for Student Services (Student Experiences & Alumni Affairs) for the Office of Student Affairs within Rutgers School of Public Health
Responsible for leadership, oversight, and management of student services and experiences part of the Office for Students and in cooperation with the Office for Academic and Faculty Affairs. The Assistant Dean (AD) will serve as primary touch point for all student services and experiences. The AD will create a culture of collaboration and cooperation across units within the School, University, and public health organizations for educational, practicum and professional opportunities. Supervises the hiring and training of faculty engaged in teaching these courses. Identifies, develops and maintains relationships with local, state and national agencies/organizations, governmental and voluntary health agencies, professional associations, non-profit organizations, hospitals, industry and medical care services to administer a purposeful practice/capstone program. The AD will oversee student reporting, student development, advising, and strategic planning for student services along with overseeing faculty and staff development opportunities related to students to continue supporting their success in their educational programs and professional growth, and create a culture conducive to learning and collaboration. The AD will also oversee alumni affairs to strengthen the student experience post-graduation.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Lead, direct, and coordinate of all aspects of Student Experiences and Alumni Affairs for the School of Public Health with collegiality and collaboration.
  • Serve as a member of the Dean’s leadership team. Working with leadership team to address student experience, curricular and academic issues and serves as a spokesperson and advocate for SPH.
  • Serve as public facing dean and liaison for all student and alumni related matters for University and professional organizations. Identifies potential student practice sites and supervisors suited to the program’s various concentrations by establishing professional relationships with local, state, and national public health agencies and organizations for the placement of practice experience students.
  • Primary campus liaison for New Brunswick/Piscataway location and university student service units in New Brunswick/Piscataway – Financial Aid, Public Safety, Student Health Services, Student Wellness Program, Student Health Insurance Program, Academic support, etc.; develops relationships with services at other SPH locations as needed.
  • Create policies and procedures as well as workflow systems for student activities and will develop and oversee new electronic system to generate time specific and historic reports to administration on student admission, retention, and graduation numbers to track and project student population and demographics.
  • Develop and oversee new electronic systems. These will generate time specific and historical reports on registration and practicum experiences; reporting system for students, faculty, and staff to consistently voice complaints, concerns, violations, and appeals; advising note system to track staff interactions and communication with students and alumni.
  • Develop streamlined e-data records for students to track key aspects of their experience from prospective student to alumnus.
  • Develop workshops on emerging trends and best practices for supporting and working with students.
  • Implement consistent onboarding and training schedule for new student facing staff across units.
  • Coordinate opportunities for student service units and other external partners to present to faculty and staff.
  • Promote health and wellness in the SPH student population by providing supportive listening with students if needed.
  • Will coordinate services for students in need of comprehensive counseling.
  • Implement and monitor all aspects of SPH strategic planning with regard to student services, student experiences, practicum experiences and capstone requirements.
  • Oversee student organization governance and budgeting structure, which includes responsibility for scholarship award allocations for current students, which include travel/academic support.
  • Develop and maintains online platforms, including but not limited to: Canvas, the School website, and social media, to keep students informed of events, services, resources, and career opportunities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Master’s Degree in public health or counseling, social work, or related field
  • Must be able to work with the highest levels of university administration, as well as executives elsewhere in the public health sector.
  • Must possess vehicle or alternate means of transportation and valid driver’s license
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be attentive to the needs of the organization and contributions of co-workers, faculty, and students.
  • Must appreciate unique characteristics of different cultures and
    minority groups and respect individual differences.
  • Must be a team-player, innovative and a self-starter with motivation to contribute

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Outstanding human relations and leadership
    skills and the ability to function in a team environment is required. Knowledge of how to accomplish superior performance in a
    unionized environment is preferred.
