Posting Summary
Rutgers School of Public Health (SPH) is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist IV for the NJ Safe Schools Program, located in Piscataway, NJ. Under direction of the Principal Investigator, assists in the coordination and administration of specific phases of applied research, including interventions (educational and/or environmental), incident/injury surveillance and training evaluation data entry and analysis. In addition, performs field work, and presents results in written (including on-line) and oral formats. Goals include accurate, precise community and school-based applied research and practice, online asynchronous educational trainings, and electronic (and print) materials to empower diverse populations to reduce or prevent exposures and to make informed decisions about environmental and occupational safety and health. Responsibilities directly relate to the science and policy of environmental and occupational safety and health. In addition, this position co-supervises undergraduate student interns and MPH students (applied professional experiences) from Rutgers University, and facilitates collaborations with other NJ public universities for approved projects or proposals.
 Among the key duties for this position are the following:
  • Assists in the coordination and administration of specific phases of science-based in-person and online trainings as well as applied research, including interventions (educational and/or environmental), incident/injury surveillance and training evaluation data entry and analysis.
  • Performs field work and presents results in written (including on-line) and oral formats.
  • Assists with quantitative and qualitative data collection as well as reporting procedures including the development and preparation of abstracts, papers and presentations for conferences.
  • Visits participants in field at homes, schools and other community locations as required.
  • Establishes and maintains accurate records of phone and email contacts for applied field research.
  • Assists with ensuring the dissemination of quality prints and online resources like educational materials and other information regarding program, research and policy activities.
  • Initiates and composes appropriate correspondences in a clear and concise manner to internal and external sources.
  • Assists in preparing grant proposals, interim and final reports for the funding agency or foundation, and program-related e-newsletters and conference abstracts and presentations for the public.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, etc.) or a related applied discipline or a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, etc.) or a related applied discipline plus one (1) year of related research experience.
  • Basic-to-Intermediate knowledge and skills in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and PowerPoint are required, advanced knowledge preferred. Training in and proficiency with one or more standard statistical software packages (SAS, SPSS, R, STATA, etc.) is essential.
  • Valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree plus one (1) year of experience preferred.
  • Experience working with school districts and familiarity with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NIOSH (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health), and EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) materials and programs preferred.
  • Prior quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis experience preferred.
  • Membership in relevant professional associations at state and national levels preferred.
