Occupational Summary

Conduct independent research acti vities under the guidance of a faculty mentor in preparation for a full time academic or research career.


 
Work Performed

The postdoctoral fellow will lead a project fo cused on metabolism and contraction/relaxation impairments in striated m uscle (cardiac and limb) and exercise intolerance in rodents with heart failure. The primary responsibilities include procedures for inducing di sease, perform systemic interventions, measure muscle contractile functi on in situ and in vitro, assaysfor mitochondrial oxidants and respirati on, echocardiography, and exercise (treadmill) tests in rodents. The pos tdoc will collect and analyze data, present results in individual and gr oup meetings, prepare figures for reporting findings, and lead or assistwith writing manuscripts. The position is suitable for individuals with a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DVM, DSc) and experience in biomedical rese arch that include muscle physiology, metabolism, or cardiovascular physi ology; experience working with rodents; interests in translational resea rch; willingness to advance complementary work in patients.


DEFINITION:

The Postdoctoral Appointee holds a PhD or equivalent doctorate (e.g. ScD, MD ,DVM). Candidateswith non-US degreesmay be required to provide proof of degree equivalency.

1. A candidate may also be appointed to a postdoctoral position if the candidate has completed all of the requi rements for a degree but the degree has not been formally conferred: in this case, the candidate may present evidence of completion of the degre e requirements, together with a statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be conferred. If the degree is not conferred by this pr ojected date, the postdoctoral appointment may be terminated.

2 . Note for international candidates: Generally, immigration classificati ons (e.g., H-1B, J-1, etc.) require that the requisite degree be conferr ed before a petition can be filed or a visa document issued to sponsor t he individual.

The term of the appointment is limited (see Section 5 of the Postdoc Policy for length of appointment).

The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarsh ip, and may include teaching responsibilities.

The appointment is generally preparatory for a full time academic or research career.

The appointment is not part of a clinical training program, unles s research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is the prim ary purpose of the appointment.

The Postdoctoral Appointee func tions under the supervision of a mentor or a department at Duke Universi ty.

The Postdoctoral Appointee is expected to publish the resul ts of his or her research or scholarship during the period of the appoin tment.

EXPECTATION:

The conscientious dischar ge of research orscholarship responsibilities, which may include teachi ng responsibilities for Postdoctoral Associates

Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research

Compliance with go od scholarly and research practice

Maintenance of a laboratory notebook and/or other comparable records of research activity, which rem ains theproperty of Duke University upon termination

Adherence to University standards regarding use of isotopes, chemicals, infectiou s agents, animals, human subjects, and the like

Open and timely discussion with the mentor regarding all facets of the Postdoctoral App ointee's research activities. Postdoctoral Appointees are encouraged to consult the AAMC Compact Between Postdoctoral Appointees and Their Ment ors for suggested guidelines for the Postdoctoral Appointee-mentorrelat ionship

Prompt disclosure to the mentor regarding the possessio n and desire to distribute materials, reagents, software, copyrightable and potentially patentable discoveries derived from the Postdoctoral App ointee's research.

Collegial conduct towards members of the res earch group and others as described in the Duke University School of Med icine Honor Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant conduct poli cies pertaining to other schools at Duke University.
