Position Summary:

Dr. Valery Forbes’ Laboratory in the Department of Biological Sciences in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative postdoctoral scholar with strong quantitative and modeling skills to develop and evaluate population models that can inform risk assessments of pesticides and other stressors to populations of threatened and endangered freshwater mussel species. The models will also be used to evaluate the relative effectiveness of different risk mitigation strategies and conservation practices to support recovery plans for mussel populations.

The project is co-funded by Syngenta Crop Protection and Florida Atlantic University, and the postdoctoral fellow will be co-supervised by Dr. Valery Forbes (FAU) and Dr. Maxime Vaugeois (Syngenta). The project is entirely model-based; there will be no collection of empirical lab or field data, though existing datasets will be used for model development and evaluation. Collaboration with relevant government agencies is anticipated.

The position term is for 2 years and is annually renewable depending on performance and availability of funding. The successful candidate will receive training in professional and personal development, research collaboration, presentation and publication of results, outreach, and mentoring. The position includes a competitive salary and health insurance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in a discipline relevant to the research theme (e.g., biology, ecology, mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline) by the time of appointment. Demonstrated experience with mathematical or simulation modeling and/or computer programming is required. Familiarity with agent-based modeling is desirable.
