Job Description


Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Associate positions with the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA. The postdoctoral fellows will work under the supervision of Prof. Yingda Cheng on modeling and numerical methods for high dimensional kinetic equations. One of the positions will be funded by the DOE MMICC center for Hierarchical and Robust Modeling of Non-Equilibrium Transport (https://charmnet-mmicc.github.io/). The research conducted will involve development of sparse grid, tensor based numerical methods for high dimensional PDEs, data driven reduced order models for transport equations and scientific machine learning.

The positions will be based at Virginia Tech’s campus in Blacksburg, VA. The postdoc will have a teaching load of 1 to 2 classes per year. The positions are for two years, and can be renewed on the third year pending satisfactory performance.


Required Qualifications

We seek candidates with a PhD in Mathematics or an equivalent area, and with a strong background in scientific computing and data driven modeling and computation. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
● Strong background in the development and/or application of finite element methods for partial differential equations.
● Strong background in numerical implementations of PDE solvers.
● Highly experienced in programming in the C/C++, Python.
● Familiar with dimension reduction techniques.
● Ability to work with others in an interdisciplinary environment.


Preferred Qualifications


● Experience in scientific machine learning.
● Experience with the scientific computing library and parallel programming.
● Experience with writing scientific articles with LaTeX.
