Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing for the Division of Student Affairs. Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications, with a dotted-line report to the Executive Director of Student Centers and Activities (SCA), the Assistant Director will be responsible for the direction and implementation of communications and marketing efforts for the department of SCA to promote the services provided within the Student Centers to current students, the university community, prospective vendors, and non-university clients while effectively communicating “departmental stories” to these constituents.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Assists in the marketing of the various programs and services available through Student Centers and Activities, including on-campus events; meeting, reservations, and event services; student organizations; and other initiatives of the departments.
  • As necessary, provides communications and marketing support to directly advised student organizations, cultural center departments, divisional departments.
  • Assists the Associate Director of Communications in supporting the communications efforts for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Supervises student marketing team.
  • Directly manages the social media channels of Student Centers and Activities.
  • Responsible the departments digital and print media presence, branding of the departments and their programs, the coordination of a consistent message with the Division of Student Affairs and other departmental initiatives.
  • Will be one of the “faces” of Student Centers and Activities throughout the university serving on committees and being responsible to monitor the public relations of the department.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in public relations, communications, marketing, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience with marketing, graphic design, project management, public relations, and supervision.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of branding and visual identity systems.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Proven experience using the internet as a marketing tool for disseminating information.
  • Must be able to analyze, process, and organize large quantities of complex information from a variety of sources.
  • Must be comfortable with social media and email marketing as a communications tool, as well as able to think broadly and conceptually and formulate creative solutions to communication problems.
  • Requires strong organization skills and attention to detail, as well as the ability to work well in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • Website content management systems such as Wordpress and Drupal.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, across multiple clients and prioritize projects and resources to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and explain technical and/or conceptual information to laypersons.
  • Knowledge of video production, including tripod and lighting setup, microphone/audio setup, video capture, editing, and exporting to various platforms.
  • Knowledge in use of DSLR cameras, lenses, and accessories.
Equipment Utilized
  • Mac operating system, Windows operating system, Microsoft Office, Photo/Video equipment (DSLR and specialized cameras, tripods, lighting, microphone systems), Wordpress and Drupal Content Management Systems, online project management systems, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube; Adobe Creative Suite. Online teleconferencing and collaboration tools such as Zoom, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Box, and Smartsheet
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Light lifting and carrying of photographic/Video equipment.
  • Time will be divided between working out of the office and on location around the New Brunswick campus for meetings, event coverage, and observation of facility usage and student media consumption trends.
Special Conditions
  • Will require working occasional evenings and weekends for initiatives and program coverage.
