Job Summary

Conduct independent research activities under the guidance of a faculty mentor in preparation for a full time academic or research career.

Candidates must have graduated from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school or certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates or by the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence. In addition, successful completion of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination and veterinary medical licensure in at least one state is required.

The Duke University Laboratory Animal Medicine Training Program (DULAMTP) is a three-year program; however, residents with prior research experience may complete their training in two years, provided the individual has research experience and has a published paper that satisfies the ACLAM requirements. Duke University is an ideal institution for laboratory animal training. The animal care and use program includes more than 15 laboratory animal species with an extremely diverse array of research initiatives.

The DULAMTP's components involve research (if applicable), hands-on clinical work, didactic learning, and opportunities to gain laboratory animal experience at neighboring institutions, including governmental and other academic institutions. Most of the clinical experience occurs during the first and third years, with an increased emphasis on the research experience in the second year, to ensure that the resulting publication has been accepted and the resident is board eligible by the time their residency has been completed. Select residents may enter into graduate school to pursue advanced research training with a resultant degree.

Special Working Conditions

Occupational Health and Safety

As a safeguard for the employee and the animals, medical examinations and risk assessments are performed.  Some immunizations or further diagnostics may be required prior to working with specific animals or animal populations as determined by occupational health medical personnel, including, but not limited to:

  • TB testing and clearance;
  • Hepatitis B (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
  • Rabies (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
  • Tetanus (current vaccination less than 10 years);
  • Measles (proof of immunization and/or vaccination);
  • Periodic physical examinations including respiratory fit tests);
  • Other vaccines or testing as required by EOHW standards.

Hazard exposure

The animal facility has a variety of environmental conditions. Specifically, employees may be exposed to potentially hazardous noise, dust, chemicals, extreme heat, and animal waste products. The duration of exposure of any of the above is dependent on assigned duties. Some aspects of this position may expose the incumbent to potentially zoonotic and other biohazardous agents. Appropriate protective clothing and equipment may be required and will be provided when required, accompanied by appropriate training.
